Need some help!

I know this isn't about a mustang but i still need some help. I have this old 73 Buick station wagon with a 455 in it and it hasn't been driven in like 20 yrs, so what is all the things i need to do to it in order to get it up and runnin again? I tried lookin it up on different search engines but couldn't really find the answer i was lookin for. I knew i could just ask it here and probably will be answered. Thanks for all your help.

Plugs, Wires, Rotor, Cap, Points( if applicable) change gas...that should get it started if the carb isnt FUBR. If so, replace/rebuild that too.

There is a problem with the cooling. I think it might need a new thermostat, because i drove it a while back across town and the radiator started boiling over. It's alright when u first start it up but after it has been driven a while it starts to get hot again. What do u guys think

yeah, its probably rusted up... Flush the radiator and block ASAP

Ok, so how long ago did you have it running and how did it run before it got too hot?

Radiator is probably clogged with deposits and/or rust. Drain it and see what it looks like. If not too bad then flush the system. If it is bad go ahead and replace it.

Automatically replace the thermostat regardless. How old is the gas in it? Does it still have 20 year old gas? Did you drive it on 20 year old gas? If it has/had old gas in it flush the fuel lines. Regardless, rebuild the carb as gas would be stored in it no matter what. All the above mentioned before my post are all good ideas.

Check the brakes. They can be rusted bad. Flush the brake lines and put in new fluid.

It wasn't driven long ago. i would say 4 months maybe and everything was running fine except the radiator kept over heating. So it's ganna be a while until i get the money to give it a tune up and do all the things u guys said to do but it won't be nearly as much work as u guys are talkin bout cause it's in pretty good condition the engine only has 71,000 miles on it, which is a plus for me. I just need to replace the spark plugs, change the oil, flush the radiator and get a new thermostat. After all that is done i'm pretty sure i'll be golden. thanks for all your help guys. O0

New plugs
Replace all fluids
Check wires and distributor (primarily cap and rotor)
FUEL FILTER <--- DO NOT FORGET THAT!
And take care of your radiator problem...


I had an old 73 ford that sat for years...

Gas, charge batt, plugs, and fuel filter... Started right up... Then I took care of the oil and whatnot...

you said in the first post it hadn't been driven in 20 years, thats why we gave you such an extensive to-do list.

Over time gasoline turns to varnish. That's why the concern for the carb, jets and float mechanisms getting gummed up real bad and such. Brake fluid attracts and absorbs water. This can occur over time at the wheel cylinders and any place the system is not perfectly tight. This can cause the brake fluid to boil at a much lower temperature than normal and cause a loss of braking. The cooling system, over a long period like that, tends to rust no matter what the mixture is like.
