Hey Folks,

Whilst reading up on the SN95 series cars I've watched a couple of vid's showing people starting up their cars, specifically the dials. In every case the behaviour is different to that of my car.

On my car when I turn the ignition to the run position all the dials sweep their full extent and the digital display turns on every segment. I've shot a short video showing this, does anybody else's SN95/New Edge do this?

The full dial sweep is usually an indicator of a low battery/voltage loss

Ah ok, now that might make sense when I bought the car she'd been sitting for some time, at least a year, and the battery was flat. We put a booster pack on her and she fired up right away and has been fine since but I guess the battery could be on the way out.

The other 'odd' thing which is a bit hard to see from the video is that the 'Theft' light doesn't come during start up.

Seems my car is doing this at every start :

Instrument test for 99- Stangs

Display - GAGE

Activates gauge sweep of all gauges, then displays present gauge values. Also carries out the checksum tests on ROM and EE. If the gauge sweep is inoperative, INSTALL a new instrument cluster.

One of the wires going into the back of the cluster supplies constant power from the battery. In theory, if you took that wire and connected it to the ignition power and it would force the cluster to do a sweep every time you started the car up.

It's probably a battery/voltage related issue. Has it always done this? Does the theft light blink when the car is off?

Hey deeplist, yes its always done for me but I've only owned the car for about 3months. No the theft light doesn't flash/light at any time.

if it's not a battery or voltage related issue, somebody may have modified the wiring to make it do the gauge sweep because it "looks cool" or whatever. If that's the cause, it's not going to hurt anything, the cluster is just tricked into thinking the battery was unhooked each time you shut the car off.

You could always pull the cluster out and see if anything looks "funny" on the back. They're not too difficult to get out of there.
