Oil changes...

You supposed to change it @ 3,000 miles/3 months, right? My last change was on 12/20/07. The mileage was 123,,065! I am having it done in the morning! I'm now @ 124,096! That's 1,031 miles!! I don't take her out of town because my conv frame is all jacked up. I @ 1st thought it would be under 1,000 miles! I am taking her to get the top fixed pretty soon though. There's rain in the whole state right now! The top is messed up so there's a 1/2" gap above my windows! It CANNOT get wet now! I can understand if you store your car on the low mileage. I drive it every weekday though! I just thought it was funny!

i wouldn't get your oil changed. you only have a thousand miles on your current oil. 3,000 miles is when you want to change it.

i will only change my oil if i get to the 3k miles.
why change an oil thats been used for 1k miles it dont make sense to me?

Eh, if you drive in short spurts, often, like I do, then every three months, but if it's just been sitting there, nothing happened to the oil.

that pretty much is the rule of thumb on alot of the oils.. but also with these newer synthetics your able to go further on them.. (or least your suppose to be able to) but personally for me i go by the 3000 rule just to keep the engine clean and happy on the inside...

main reason for the 3 month rule (with some synthetics its longer) is because once you pop that top on the oil can/bottle (depending on your brand of choice) just like with brake fluid it allows air and moisture into the oil.. Which in the end harms your engine and the performance of the oil. if the oil cant do its job by keeping the parts properly lubricated it allows friction to start building up, which in turn builds more heat on those crucial parts, which in turn can cause them to fail costing you big $$ in repairs.. The engine itself is not perfectly sealed to keep condensation out of the oil.. with a car driven on a regular basis the condensation thats seeped in gets burned off allowing the oil to keep it performing like it should..

the other reason for it is once that tops poped and run through the engine it starts rapidly breaking down its chemical makeup.

I change It every 6000 miles. I do need to change my fuel filter though. I bought one I don't have money right now to get the tool And my car wont fit on my ramps :tickedoff:

if i remember right autozone will loan you the tool for that...

mine does that too (least the underside of the bumper enough to push them around).. try this take a 2x4 and put it infront of the rampsthen drive up onto the 2x4.. it should give you enough lift to clear so you can get up on them...

Allot of the newer cars and trucks tell you when to change your oil by the way you drive. It does not measure it in miles, it measures it in engine hours. Engine hours is the best way to measure your oil changes.

it really depends on the oil and filter you use .....anything in the last 10 years being made recomends 5k intervals ...3k is a safe number though i run royal purple and change my oil about once a year in my mustangs they never really get driven and i always check to see when the oil is getting dirty and it never looks that way always clean and purple :thumb:

I used to not buy into the 3 month thing until I pulled some oil out of my Z28 with only a few hundred miles on it but it had been sittting for several months. After looking at the oil it definately needed to be changed. 3k or 3 months. :thumb:

was it like milky looking? cuz i know when ive rebuilt some engines that had sat long time the oil turned to a light milky brown and poured little thicker than milk would.. but wondering how long they actually take to turn to that..

that sounds like a blown head gasket....

usually when theyve sat that long to get them like that people dont usually try to run them without an overhaul.. or least the oil being changed.. but i wouldnt doubt it would blow the head gaskets if someone tried running on it..

lol milky oil is blown or oil that has set for a very long time ...basically condensation in the oil ...aka bad...it will wash the oil out of the bearing ...
