Looking for engine swap for my '96 non-pi and found a'94 on carpart.com with 78k, it's local only $25 to sent it to a shop. They have it listed at $950. Doesnt say if it's from a GT or not. Is that price in the ballpark for those miles?

From what I've seen from the listings the p.i. years run in the $1200 - 1800 range.

Thanks for any suggestions!

PI motors are a dime a dozen here. I get them for $300. High miles on most but if you get one for cheap you can spend the money on a rebuild.so everything is new.

They're about $500 over here.

If you look hard enough, you can probably do better than $950. That just seems excessive.

The 1996 I just bought has about 200,xxx miles and the intake manifold just crapped out. I don't see it makes sense to put more $ into it and am thinking about buying an engine with lower mileage.

My garage quoted me about $500 to buy and install a new manifold - is that high?

I have NO experience with automotive repair and even if I was interested, just have basic tools. Gotta use a shop to do most of my repair. If anyone in the Richmond area knows of a good shop, please let me know.

NOT sent from my toilet, this time anyway.

$500 sounds about right for a shop to do the swap.

The manifold brand new will be like $300 and the other $200 will fall into labor and all the new seals, gaskets, and material things you need.
If I were you, I would either get a new PI engine like you said, or at least throw in a PI intake manifold in there.

Prices are all over the place on them. If you go asking for a engine outta a 99+ Mustang GT they are gonna stick it to ya everytime. You need to ask about the 02+ Crown Vic or the 02+ Explorer. They are a lot cheaper for some reason and with the Explorer engine you get the Aluminum block which shaves a good bit of weight off the front end.

Thanks for the info. I took a look and it seems the Explorers are just about the same as the Mustang, but the Crown Vics are running around 4-500.

For the Crown Vic, would I have to get the computer system that goes with it? Which years would be OK to fit, 02 - ?

Parts.com has 3 choices for engines:
4.6L
4.6L Romeo no oil cooler
4.6L Romeo with oil cooler
Which one?

to be honest, look for a pi motor from a crown vic or something....usually they haven't been beaten on and are usually cheaper just because of what they came out of..

PI motors out of Crown Vics that weren't cop cars are usually in really good shape because an old person had it. Exploder motors... great for the block, what I would get if I was doing the swap right meow (already done by PO) but they cost more. IIRC the WAP block in the Exploder is good for a pretty decent amount of power. Not as much as the iron block or the Teksid but more than most ppl will make.

The WAP block in the explorer will handle more power than 99.99999% of people will ever make.

It drops like 75-80 lbs off the front end and you should be able to find one cheaper than a mustang IMO.

I paid like 600 bucks for my 03-04 Exploder 4.6 2v with like 30k miles on it and honestly I paid that because I needed the motor fast and got it from a junkyard, it was 100%, knew it ran and warrantied.

Im sure you could do some searching and pick one up from a private seller cheaper...I wouldnt pay 950 for a 80k mile PI motor personally.

Thanks for all the advice, it's nice to know that this is a friendly place to get good information! :headbang:

I see that there are quite a few 2004 Crown Vic engines available in my area in the $400-500 range and I'm trying to get a local mechanic to help me out with the install.

Can't wait to drive it again!

Mustang's now in a different shop, going to have a 2004 Mustang GT 4.6L put in with only 77,xxx miles. The valve heads are going to be reconditioned because it's been sitting for about a year, but I have a good feeling about the mechanic, Mike Rousch. He's apparently a well respected tuner in this area. He's also going to update my exhaust system which is now a off road, to one with cats. I like the sound but I live in a pretty conservative area and the po-po have nothing better to do than hassle drivers for tint or noise.

I'm having him install the head and tail lights that were in the trunk, apparently the last owner bought them but never put them on. The originals are pretty fogged up so I'm looking forward to having some appearance updates!
