painting gas tank?

is it ok to paint the plastic cover over my gas tank? its a sore thumb on the rear end. i was also wanting to paint the rear bottom lip of my rear bumber. how would i go about doing these things?

Mask, scuff and spray for the lip, as for the cover you can spray it in place of remove it and do it right. Not that difficult, you just need to be sure to support the tank itself.

Support the tank and loosen the straps and mask off the tank bands and the sand with some sand paper and wipe clean with denatured alcohol or paint prep found at the auto parts store and pick your poison and have at it

That's an idea.. I might have to try this with at least gloss black, that'd slick up the look nicely.
