Painting the lower of my rear bumper??

Heyy I think I'm gonna go ahead and paint the bottom of my rear bumper this weekend. Any suggestions on what I should do prep wise?? Thanks.

sand with 220 grit then prime then sand with a higher grit so you dont see the marks when u do the black. But thats just me...

If it were me, I would just take my time, make sure the whole area is sanded well and evenly, and once again, take your time. If you going to tackle the project of painting anything on the exterior of your car, I would assume you don't need to know the basics. But like I said, the first car I painted, the only thing I would change if I could go back, is just a better sanding job.

mine came out badass looking.

-Use duplicolor bumper coating

-lightly wet sand the area just to scuff it up

-masking is everything

if your paint is in good shape and nothing wrong with it. I would wet sand it 1000 grit that way you wont get any sand marks and it will scuff the area and make sure to mask the area good as in the whole bumper and up to the trunk lid cause you dont want to get any over spray anywhere.. In reference to the premixed duplicolor stuff. I hate it. I had a guy at O'reilly suggest it when I went to have some paint mixed, so I tried it on my bike. The paint laid out just fine, but in less than a year it was faded so bad it looked flat black. I would just wet sand it with a red scotch brite pad, wipe it down with some thinner, and just spray it with a rattle can meant for plastic.

Just install some bumper inserts at the same time...looks sexy teamed with the painted bottom piece

Mine was painted from the factory but faded, I just masked, cleaned with alcohol then scuffed with scotch-brite and sprayed

Looks worlds better and was simple to do

being where it is, you could get away without any prep work. i did both of my last two cars the lazy way, and just masked it off and painted it, and neither of those cars ever had a problem with the paint flaking or anything.

plus, with how cheap a can of flat black paint is, and the fact that for the most part, you dont even have to mask the bumper off to do a quick touch-up if need be, i wouldnt even worry about prep work. id just paint it, be on with your day, and in a couple years when you may get a flake or two, just respray it.

Was yours already painted the color of your car? Or was it the plain matte black bumper?

CLEAN IT GOOD!! i just painted a gt500 bumper, 281 wing and now im doing a fuel tank for a buddy, if you didnt already paint this let me know i could possibly spray it at the same time as im working on the tank... let me know

Was yours already painted the color of your car? Or was it the plain matte black bumper?

Mine originally came the color of the car. No 98' car came with the bottom part parted matte black. I did mine myself. I just lightly wet sanded the area, masked, and sprayed.

The reason i wet sanded was just to make it a little rough so the paint would stick. 4 years and counting!!!!
