I always put tire shine on, finish the car, then take a rag and wipe around the tires and take the excess crap off. The tires are dark, but not sloppy wet looking.

Sounds like you are putting too much on. Try using a detailing sponge.

Try CG VRP, Surf City Garage Beyond Black, or Optimum Opti-Bond are all great choice.

When I do my tires, I spray them down with some Eagle One tire gel I picked up at Oreillys and use the brush to work it in in all the little cracks and stuff. And after I get done with all 4, I start again wiping them down with a towel to get any excess off. They look clean, but like Jimi_drix said, not just ran through a puddle wet.

looks as good as ever. I'm pretty sure I use the same meg's tire shine. I like the armor-all sponges, but I will only put tire shine on if I'm not going to be driving the car for a while. otherwise you get the sling-effect. I just coat it on and let the car sit... dunno, works for me.
