One question, I'm repairing my 97 GT 4.6 and was wondering if the radiator from the 5L engine is the same as in 281 (4.6)?

will the radiator from a 302 fit my 281 and no problems?

yup, sure will. all 4.6L radiators, 97-04 are interchangeable. if you have an automatic you will need to take one off an automatic, if you a have a manual shift car you can take it off an auto or stick (5-speed 03/04 Mach1's got the same radiator as the 03/04 cobra)

I guess my real questions are: How much better is the 03-04 Cobra/Mach1 radiator compared to the one in my 97? How does the Cobra/Mach1 radiator compare to an aftermarket aluminum one? I'm using my Mustang as an autoX and track car and it has a 5 speed transmission.

well, i have the 04 mach1 radiator in my car (its off an 04 mach1 5speed) and here are the differences ive noticed:

1) its all aluminum instead of the aluminum w/plastic side tanks that our cars came with
2) its about 1/4" thicker than the the ones our cars came with
3) the side tanks arent as big as the plastic ones.
4) before i put it on, my car used to be right in the middle of "NORMAL", right between the "R" and the "M". now with the radiator, its right above the middle of the "R", so its running a little cooler

overall, its a good swap. if you can get one for cheap (less than $100) i would say you go for it. i got mine free, which is why i upgraded it. if you cant find one for under $100 and you want to upgrade, i would prob say get an aftermarket one.

I would have to say mishimoto for $210 shipped from american muscle.com, i have one and on average with a 180 t-stat the car never goes above the "O" and on hot summer days here in Houston with the A/C on in traffic the hottest I have seen is dead center of the "R"

Fuel mileage is probably not the best but performance gets helped a little. In my view its cheap insurance, either overheat and plan on hurting something or lose a little mileage and keep it cool.

i guess thats a good way of looking at it. my car still has the factory tstat, so it runs around 190* the entire time im abusing it (and yes, i abuse it....lots of sustained high RPM runs). i think i might throw in some water wetter and call it a day.

Have you had any issues with your radiator? I am looking at a Mishimoto or an 03/04 and I can't make my mind up.

For good stock replacements 1-800-radiator is where i've gotten a few radiators over the years.
