So the other day I heard a squeal coming from in the trunkish area of my car (back seats are down, so I can hear everything). Got under the car as far as I could the other day and sprayed down the back of my driveshaft around the u joint with some release oil and it seemed to have maybe gone away.. But it was back the next time I drove it.

Question is, what should I try next? I know it's either the pinion shaft bearing or the u joint, I'm leaning towards u joint tho because it has that lopey squeal to it if that makes any sense..

What kind of squeal? Like a constant sound? does it go away when you get up to speed?
Likely a dumb question, but does it go away when braking? Brakes can make all sorts of nasty sounds.

I had a nasty u-joint in my truck last year, it was very loud when I was rolling until I got up to speed. Was a loud squealing sound but I think it sounded more like grinding when it got bad.

FUNNY Belb haha.........

Scott and Orange my apologies I should have been more specific. It starts squealling (<---- Really? Squeal is a word but squealling isn't? Da fak?) after about 2 mins or so of driving. Not right away, but not long after first pulling away. It starts when driving tho, and definitely sounds bearing/u joint related. But it starts when driving and doesn't stop until I'm down to about <5mph. It was going away when it warms up, but recently it just gets a little quieter, doesn't go away.

Higher RPM's seem to make it fade away tho.. I'll ride out 2nd and 3rd to about 3500 and it fades away, but as soon as I shift and the RPMs drop back down it's back.. So either it disappears or I just can't hear it over the engine/exhaust

hmm, doesn't sound like a u-joint to me. But I could be wrong and u-joints are easy and cheap.

Are you sure its coming from the back of the car? Sounds more like a pulley bearing to me...

Definitely coming from the rear.... I think. I mean it has to be because when it starts squealing (<--- ahh idiot over here spelled it wrong...) I can hear it coming from the trunk. And my buddy stopped me and was like dude the back of your car is making some loud fawkin squeals. I dunno man it's gotta be that or the pinon bearing.. But the pinion bearing is practically brand new

And Belbs actually it was pretty dam funny hahaha. But my fawkin muffler is held up with wire right now man, the pipe that connects the dump to the muffler got ripped out and either ran over, or picked up by a bum looking for scrap metal..

Is it a squeal or a whine? I don't think it's the pinion if its a squeal. And higher rpms may just be covering the sound. Have you been down under your car to look for any wear? Do you have greasable u joints on your car so you can just hook up to a nipple and squeeze some grease in? I'd say..get the rear of your car on some stands and accelerate through gears. Have a buddy under there to listen where its coming from.

^^GREAT idea!! I'll have to get that done Friday or Saturday. Don't know why I didn't think of that...

I do not have greasable joints tho, not that I know of.. Only had it up once and that was when I was rigging my muffler up after jumpin some tracks lol.. I'll for sure get it up this weekend because it's driving me fawking insane

just service the drive-shaft and u joints.... that will rule it out for $40.00.....

my back-lash was bad in the mustang when we first bought it (service tech said "yea, aftermarket gears are supposed to make that sound.... ****ing dealerships.) it was a whine at low speeds, squeal at high speeds. Driving back from wyoming the squealing (<----- one l, not two lls.) got so bad I had to pull over and sit for 15 minutes to let my head ache die down.

LOL thanks for the spell correction MC. I can usually spell very well...

But man I'm hoping like hell it's not a backlash issue........ That's such a pita. Believe it or not, the shim count was the same for the 4.10's as the 3.27's... So to be completely honest I just left it like it was for 3.55's.... Figured well if it's the same for low and high, should be same for middle? Boy I hope I didn't fukk that up. But fortunately it's a solid squeal at low and high speeds, doesn't change to a whine at lower speeds.

Good call tho, maybe I should just do the dam u joint
