Ever since my IRS swap I'm tracing down noises coming from the rear of the car.. I thought I didn't tighten the shock nuts in the trunk enough, so I tightened them yesterday to the point where the rubber is now squashed between the tower and the top washer..

And it's gotten worse lol.. It's constantly moaning now on uneven roads, braking, accelerating.. How tight do these nuts have to be and can you grease them up?

There is a specific torque spec for the Nut. I will look in my ford guide in the morning for you.

Just curious, did you change all the bushings on the IRS prior to install?

Very curious as to how to get a torque wrench on the rear shock nut when you have to keep the strut from spinning.I was always told that you tighten the rear shock nut untill the washer slightly squashes the bushing.

a lot of times you tighten it until you can't go any further, from what I recall most new shocks only have so much thread on them... it should bottom out with the rubber slightly squashed, but not smooshed out all over the place.

I seem to remember that you are supposed to flatten the bushing until it's the same diameter as the washer on the outside.

My Ford Service manual say this... And I Quote.

"Lower vehicle. Install the insulator assembly to the upper shock stud. Tighten to 34-46Nm (25-33 lb-ft)."

I bet the noise is just the rear end suspension being through the delrin bushings. delrin transmit much more noise than rubber.

No it's def comming from the trunk and sounding like the shock tower rubbers.. maybe the new plates holding the bolts that I made through the framerail.. I'll grease the rubbers up real good and loosen m somewhat, see what that does. thanks for looking it up anyway Handz

Pics of the plates you used to secure the bolts through the trunk floor. I doubt its your upper shock bushings; also the delrin bushings transmit a lot of road noise and harshness
