Deal with the fan before the water pump to save money. You can see if the fan is working or not by watching it and your temp gauge. O0

Drill a small hole and make sure the hole is on top when you put the stat in. It helps to get any air out form behind the stat. :thumb:

how can i make sure i am putting it in correctly?

There should be a diagram on the back of the box it comes in.. but just in case it doesn't.. the spring goes into the block, and the half-dome faces out (IIRC)

I guess I didn't make myself clear, sorry. What I meant was to check out the fan first before automatically changing the water pump. Checking to see if your fan is working correctly is FREE!!!! If you replace a good water pump with another one it won't fix your car if the fan is the problem all along.

Start the car and let it idle and heat up. When your gauge is where the fan should turn on check to see if it came on. If the engine starts to get too hot and the fan STILL isn't on disconnect the connector at the fan and put a voltmeter on it to see if it is getting electricity. If yes (at least 11.5 volts) then the fan is most likely bad (You can take a resistance reading and see if the fan motor is in spec or not). If no electricity is getting to the fan check the fuse first. If the fuse is good then you will have to start testing the system. Maybe the temp sender is bad. There is at least 5 things that can cause every problem.

My philosophy, from years of experience.......do the FREE stuff first to see if you find the problem. Don't just start replacing good parts until you find the bad one. I personally don't care to waste money that way.

No thermostat on a daily driver = bad idea. It will stay cool for a while, and take a long time to heat up.. but when it does heat up, it won't cool down.. your car will just overheat. This is because there is no thermostat to close and hold water in the block/radiator.. it just constantly flows.. so the water doesn't stay in your radiator long enough to transfer out the heat.. it just stays hot.

Put a brand new 160 or 180 in, and make sure it's installed correctly. If you're still overheating, investigate problems elsewhere. Fan functioning properly/spinning in proper direction (if the wires get crossed and your fan starts blowing on the radiator instead of on your engine, you will have overheating problems. The air will blow in from the front, then your fan will blow it right back out, and it will 'stall' the air on your radiator, instead of cycling it through), water pump going south, junk radiator, etc.

Bingo^^^^^^^^^^Many people do not even think about the facts in your first paragraph. Yes the thermostat does allow the engine to get to its operating temp. quicker, this is nice in the winter, BUT it also keeps the coolant in the radiator long enough to cool down in the heat of summer. If the coolant is not kept in the radiator long enough to cool down, it will progressively get hotter. All of this is goverened by the thermostat. The way a cooling system works with no thermostat in the winter time when cool or cold air is flowing across the radiator is completely different in comparision to when the air flow is warm or hot in the summer time.

this is why circile track cars dont use thermostats, but just a regular washer. regulates the water flow, enough for the rad. to be effective. if your water pump is still factory, go ahead and put one on while the coolant is out. after time the blades can rust/det. and then there is nothing left to move the coolant... beleive me, ive seen it several time before.
