Rust on inside of lower intake

Oh crap. My junkyard special gt40 lower has rust on the inside of the coolant passages... I sprayed it out with a garden hose when I first got it because it had some grit in it, and then it sat in my basement for a few months while life got in the way. I didn't wreck it, did I? It's just the passages that fork off of the water neck, so it's not like I have to worry about it contaminating any of the internals, right?

Here's a couple pics. The actual intake runners all look fine, just these coolant passages and the little indentation on one side.

I wouldn't sweat it. I used some cans extra strength oven cleaner and a scotch brite pad along with a steel brush and mine turned out fine. Alot of engines from the C.A.R.S(cash for clunkers) program end up looking like that and having the same dis-colorization and a mass amount of scaly grit (Sodium silicate). It's crying shame how many good cars i've seen fallen victim to that program just for someone to get a Toyota with a stuck accelerator. Oh the irony. :angry7:

Good to hear it's probably fine. Any idea where I can get it acid dipped or how much that would cost me?

How is the blackened stuff related to cash for clunkers again? Does that stuff have to all get cleaned off?

Depending on where you live, engine remanufacturers/builders & chroming companies have the equipment.
Cost? Not sure. Results? Like new.

Don't even worry about it. Honestly motors ingest way the hell worse alllll the time.

If you're truly concerned take a wire brush and clean it or run like a quarter can of cooling system flush through it for a week after you start running the engine.


EDIT: use a razor and clean it to the point you would eat off of it. Don't use the front and back gasket on the lower intake..use high temp RTV and put a good amount on each one (front and back). Push down, I let the lower sit for about 1/2 hour till it really hardens.

Yeah me and a friend saw 3 5.0 Expos and a 351w ford Lightning at the local junk yard that was Cash for clunkered.

washed it out and threw in the basement = not good.

Start simple and do not go overboad as you would be amazed how WD40 can take light rust off and then prevent it from happening again.
