School me on Dana axles

I have never quite understood how the whole dana 44 dana 60 axle thing works. Is Dana a style of axle or a brand or? Help!

Dana is a brand, bigger the number, more strength you have. My F350 had a dana 60 front and Sterling 10.25 in the rear. Chrysler/Jeep uses both Dana and Corporate axles. Dana is a style, each one is different (manufacturer) but more or less they are all the same.
