Sluggish cranking

A couple of months back my battery died and I replaced it with an optima batt. I took it to a shop and they told me that there was an electrical problem with my Lights, that was the reason that my car kept dying overnight which ultimately killed my old batt and was unable to hold a charge anymore. I'm starting to experience the same problems, cranking so slow that my car barely turns on. I have an aftermarket sound system (mild) and most of the time run my fan manually on high. I was debating on upgrading my alternator to a 200 amp. Any thoughts on what it could be? Or what I should do?

I had sluggish cranking before, due to corroded battery cables. Gave the dead battery symptoms when trying to crank. Might ought to check those out.

I plan to replace my alt soon, bc driving at night with lights and heater on causes my gauges to dim pretty noticeably.

this sounds familiar.

If you have a voltage draw a HO alt will not help. You need to fix it before you upgrade it.

Have you ck'd the output of the alt in the car using a volt meter?
Should be about 14.5vdc at the battery itself.

If the batt is going dead overnight then obviously you have a drain somewhere.
go out at night and look at the sun visors to make sure they are off. also look at the glove box and ashtray as well. don't forget about the hood light and trunk light too.

try pulling the fuse to the radio and amps so they're not draining the batt either.
