so it finally snowed here in gardner.. and i took the stang out for a first drive in the snow, it was exhilerating to say the least.

i pulled out of the drive, spinning...

and the next thing you know i was sideways in the road! :drunken_smilie:

just wondering if all the spinning, sliding and catching hurts your drivetrain or suspension?

if its spinning, and you catch on solid/dry pavement yes

if you are spinning and you let it idle down and you it regains tracction slowly the not as much.

i hate the snow. I can't even drive my car in it. I have to take my wife's 01 explore sport and that is a piece of junk.

I dont even think about driving mine. Theres no point, i dont drive on street tires so chances on me going anywhere in the snow is pretty much slim to none!

+1. Its currently lightly snowing here in stl. 28 degrees and wind gusting at 45 mph. Im no weatherman, but that equals like a -85 degrees windchill. Snow FTL.

My car is resting nicely in the insulated garage, had to kick off the heater because it got under 50 degrees in there this AM :tongue3:

On a side note, I got really good deals on both this GT and my last one because I bought them in November. In both cases snow was coming in and the sellers knew if i didn't buy them they would probably be there until the spring time.

uh, i have 315's on the Cobra, and I have no problems handling the car in snow.

plus, there should be no reason why you shouldnt be able to drive a (stock height or moderately lowered; assuming you arent running bigs and skinnies) mustang in the snow if you have some weight over the rear wells and/or some studded tires. i dont even do either of those, and I can still get by just fine.

i litterally blew my clucth into 100000000 pieces doing donuts and sh*tties on the ice in my V6 mustang. smoke was coming through the heater vents... it was epic.

I used to run 15" V6 wheels with 215 width snow tires on my 00GT, loaded 200+ pounds of ice melt over the rear axle, figured the weight would help me get traction and if I ever did get stuck I could break 1-2 open and throw them on the ground

I wouldn't say the car was good in snow but it was a lot better then when I was using 245 width Eagles and no weight at all

remember a skinnier tire "breaks through" the snow and ice better than a big fat foot print.. (which is why joked used a 215 tire in winter opposed to the 245s.) its common to see people use spare tires when racing (amature) on ice. spare tires are skinny and they bust through the snow. I'm *not* telling you to go get 4 spare-tires to ride on... ...

as for the smaller wheel (15") im sure he used that size simply because the tires were cheeper and easier to find.

Also, the driving school i attended (on multiple occations - MasterDrive) did a test on 3 different types of snow tires. 1 tire being a standard snow tire, 1 being a studded tire, and 1 being a "experiemental" tire with acorn shells chopped up into the rubber...

they found teh acorn shells performed poorly... they would shatter and chip away as soon as they met the ice. SOme pieces would simply fall out, leaving a large hole in the tread where a big chunk of nut-shell was.

they found with the studded tires the studs would get depressed into the rubber, thus shrinking the foot-print of the *usefull* tread. This makes them a un-needed cost, and in some states (Indiana) they are illegal to use.

They found the best stopping power to be in the standard snow tire.

They used an ice-arena as a testing ground.

I suggest Blizzacks (sp?) i suggest whatever size your car came with OEM.

buy kitty litter. Sandbags are fine, but kitty litter is cheaper, just as effective in snow, and when the bag rips in your trunk its easier to vacuum the large kitty litter chunks than the sand.

as for the spare tires, thats how i get my budget skinnies up front for drag racing... LOL!

yea, you dont want sand in your trunk. get something you can actually use, like road salt. what are you gonna do with 200lbs of kitty litter if you dont have a cat? at least if you get something like road salt, you can actually use it. plus, for only like $4 for a 50lb bag, its probably the cheapest way to go.
