Working on the motor last night, got in the new crank girlde, oil pick up, and oil pan. Went to change the bolts on the main bearings. Somehow managed to strip one out. Now there is not enough thread for the bolt to grab as its going in on top of the bearing cap.

It looks like if the bolt were a 1/4 inch longer it would work :angry7:

I am pissed off, and freaked out. Please help.

sounds like its time for a trip to the machine shop unfortunatly. you want to make sure you have good bite on your main cap bolts thats for sure.

It might be salvagable but it won't be cheap.

go get a piece of all thread in the same thread & pitch as your main bolt, 5/8 or something like that, put it in the one that is screwed up and see how many threads are left down in the hole. a couple of the main bolt holes aren't blind and you can actually come out the top side(bottom on the engine stand), you don't want to go past flush if that is the case. If you have more threads than equal the width of the bolt then you are ok. At this point you need to order a set of studs and take the block to a machine shop and have it line honed w/ the studs tightened down.
You really can't put a helicoil type device in there because it won't provide an accurate torque reading and may back out.

crap, just realized you might not be talking about a 5.0 block but it still applies.

It's a six cylinder but the 5.0 and the 3.8 have the same architecture.

There are plenty of threads left down in the holes. Without the cap on it goes on fine, it just can't catch at the very top of the hole, and the stud is not long enough.
O jeeze.
