I got a 96 GT with an overheating problem, which has to be taken care of as its my daily driver, I live in Cali and hot days are now present. OK , so this is what happens. My stang started overheating and the gauge used to go at about 3/4, until the fan turned on. I recently bought a SCT programmer, and the first thing I did was to lower the temperature in which the fan truned on. I put it at about 187, and the 2nd speed right after it, at about 190.

Now I dont really have trouble as my fan turns on at a good time, and in hot days the gauge barely passes the middle. THe huge problem is that I live in LA and I really love to be able to turn my a/c on. Thats when my nightmare starts. After a few minutes of running my car, my baby gets so hot that it almost reaches the RED!!!! :angry4: And with the fan even in the second speed it doesn't get lower, until I turn off my a/c.

The water pump in my stang was changed about 1 year ago because the other one was completely bad, just a few months after purchasing the vehicle from a car lot ( vehicle with 98xxx, bone stock, and one owner). It was changed for a new one from autozone. I had never noticed any problems as I bought the car on winter and I never used the a/c, only to see if it worked. After looking at the impeller design of a 00 stang, I decided to get it and see if that could solve the problem.

Before I go any further these are most of the mods that my car's engine has : cold air intake, bbk shorty headers, flowmasters, underdrive pulleys, SCT programmer (used a pre-loaded tune and no changes to timing), all aluminum 2 core radiator.

The car still has two cats per bank ( Thanks C.A.R.B. :angry7: ), stock H pipe, stock fan, mr. gasket 160* perf. thermostat, and my engine has never been rebuilt before. Also it doesn't throw white smoke. The radiator is almost a year old, so not too old, and as I said before new water pump from a 00 stang ( everything was the same but the impeller and the little shaft sticking out). I also flushed my cooling system about 2 months ago.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, and even though I think it is pretty hard to find out what could it be, I'll be great to see if anyone has had this problem before. If you can't think of anything, still thanks a lot for reading!

96's were notorious for this. Ford redesigned the cooling system (radiator/fan) in 97. See if you can get ahold of a radiator and fan assemble from a 97 and your problem will most likely be solved.

I'll try to call the company I got the radiator from to see if i could get anything better, cause even though my radiator is all aluminum, its not as wide as mishimoto or fluidyne. About the fan, I think I'll go to the junkyard and get a Lincoln mark VIII's again, I had bought one before, but only one speed worked.

Sorry to hi-jack the thread but I have a 1996 Mustang GT with an AUTO and I was curious, can I buy the 97 radiator (for an auto obviously) and the fan and swap that in? Will that work?

I gota deal on a mishimoto 3 row radiator which I will install over the weekend. I ordered it for a 97 though. I just have to get the fan! Hopefully this will do!

Let me know how the mishimoto works out. I've just recently had 3.55 gears installed in my car and now cause of the higher rpm driving i do the car runs hot and i've been looking at that radiator

Ok so I installed the mishimoto radiator and the car felt better even with the a/c running for a few days. I went to the junk-yard and looked for a mark VIII fan , but there wasn't any. I did however found one from a thunderbird that looks almost or the same. I installed it and yesterday in a hot day with a/c on and the gauge did pass the middle, althought it did not go so high as before. I used a thermometer and it was around 200*+ ( I could not get the highest reading). It does not overheat with a/c off. What do you guys think is a good temperature range? What do you think is high? I am now thinking on adding an aftermarket temp. gauge, what's a good brand to get without breaking the bank?

I would do a coolant flush with 180 degree thermostat. And add water wetter to top it off. Good combo to keep the temps a hair under 200. 190-200 is the best performance for a motor, before it gets heat soaked and feel like a slug.

By the way my96gtstang, the radiator that I ordered was of course all aluminum. Because my car is a 96 and the rad is 97, the top mounting brackets from the 96 mustang do not work at all. Also the two "pieces/tubes/whatever" in the bottom of the radiator( where the radiator sits in the frame) doesn't fit. The tubes from the 97 are about one inch more separated than the 96. I took my radiator to get one of the mounting tubes to get cut and welded to get them closer. Therefore if you are getting a stock 97 radiator you would have to cut it and plastic welded, or just cut it and leave it with one tube at the bottom :p As for the brackets on top, I made a trip to home depot and got a strip of metal, cut it and made a few holes put a few bolt and nuts and good as new!
I took some pics, I would probably upload them during next week.

I added water wetter two days ago, and I got a 160* high flow thermostat. About the switch, I know it a good option, but I already lowered the fan trun on temperature with the sct tuner.

Why is the 180* better than the 160* though? I'm planning in getting some aftermarket gauges too.
