my alternator started dipping voltage - going bad.
not from over use, from old age I guess. those pesky few remaining stock parts :violent1:

So I got a new one, but had my housing chromed on the stocker, so I swapped out the internals.
kinda fun phone pics, thought I'd throw it up.

put all the stuff on the left in the housing on the right...

Nice work! I bet most people would be scared to tear into the alternator! I think brushes & Diodes repairs 90% of bad alternators & pretty easy to do. Now I'd powder coat the old cases & sell them to recoup a bit of money!

the alt in my truck has been going too high and getting up to the 15v area sometimes until the motor warms up and then it goes down to a normal 13-14v. I have been contenplating doing it myself and this little pictoral might give me enough gusto to go for it. I have electrical experience but would really rather have someone behind me to help tell me if I am about to mess it up.

Any special tools needed other then torx bits and such?

Thanks guys.

Yep Twista, it works fine. it's not to hard to assemble. have to tap the shaft out of the back seat of the housing and the brush spring thingies are a little tricky to get in, otherwise it's pretty easy.

Ttocs - not bad at all, few sockets, rubber mallot and a T20 torx bit and your good2go.

Mine went bad after about 7 years of abuse and I put in a 200A Powermaster that has been great ever since.
