Just like the topic says. I need help picking out an amp for two JL Audio W3's. They are a single voice coil that put out 500rms per sub. Any suggestions on a good amp for these subs?

They are the 4 ohm version...if i get a 1000 watt amp does that mean it has the potential to put 1000 watts in two subs or just one?

I know JL makes some sweet amps just over priced IMO.

Well if you wire them together in parallel you will get 2 Ohm. So you can buy a amp that is 1000watts RMS @ 2 Ohm and it would work fine. Alpine makes a M1000 Amp that would work.

I was also looking at this amp, an Alpine PDX 1.1000. Here is the specs. Wouldn't this be a good amp for these subs?

mono subwoofer amplifier
1,000 watts RMS x 1 at 4 ohms (1,000 watts RMS x 1 at 2 ohms)
variable low-pass filter (50-200 Hz, 24 dB/octave)
Class-D amplifier design
stackable installation design with front-panel controls
quick-connect speaker connectors
preamp-level inputs and outputs
MOSFET power and output stages

Yeah its the same power output of the M1000. The PDX might has less THD... Im not sure tho.

I will be pulling out my diamond audio D9 800.4s this week. These are a series piece of amplifier with 125A fuses built in and 0 awg power inputs.....

I don't think you need a 1000w amp unless its a garbage over rated cheap product.
I used to run my JLW6 DVC on a 500/1 JL amp and it was overkill. I swapped on a JL250/1 and it pushed it just as hard and just as efficiently.
A quality 200wrms amp will efficiently operate almost any sub on the market and a 500W amp should easily handle 2 subs unless you are going for SPL competitions.

The logic is quite simple. Almost no Sub on the market can handle its max rated power for extended periods of time and throwing too much power at a sub will just cause it to run harder and over excursion damaging the sub.

In my experience the best power range is @ the 50% of the max rated level if you want good sound and longevity out of your equipment.

Rated wattage is not regulated by any agency so a company can claim any number it so chooses. The more reputable companies are less apt to play these games but still will claim outrageous numbers from its amps and subs so if you want your product too last don't over drive them.

I read that and still stand behind my what my vast experience tells me. There are very few automotive designed subs that require more then 200 wrms to operate efficiently.

Are you talking about if its set up properly so the subwoofer can achieve full excursion with less than the advertised "500 watts RMS"?
