Well I started by leaving my stang at my mechanic shop for some repairs like suspension and other stuff, the day he gives me back the car i see the oil pressure gauge go up and down and sometimes not even working... so i tell him to see whats wrong with it because the car didn't have that problem before so he has to fix it... I get a call from him today and he told me he thinks the oil pump is going out and the only way to check it is by taking the whole engine out.... I'm like WTF!!

So I really don't know what to do :dontknow:, my car came out of another shop a couple of months ago after a long time and know again??? Can someone help me out on what can be the problem??

Find the oil sending unit, replace it. Look at your gauge.

They are not mechanical and have been known to go out.

Edit: yes you are being ripped off.

Bad: don't let him touch it. Good: you came here and asked.

I'm sure others will have more detailed help for yuh

there should be a wire hooked uo to the front of the sending unit. Mine falls off all the time and the gauge stops working, then replace the sending unit....if it's still not working have a shop check it out, but not that shop.

This right here tells you all about your mechanic.

Sounds like a rip off, the 1st thing a good mechanic would do is to check the oil pressure with a mechanical gauge, as above replace the sender unit and check the wiring first.

Go underneath the car, it'll be on the oil pan on the drivers side

that would be the oil level sender, not the pressure sender. the pressure sensor is around the oil filter IIRC you'll need a special socket that you can get from autozone or advance as well I believe

when an oil pump goes, it goes, there is no fluctuation that you'll ever see on that gauge. the gauge in your dash is a simple on/off gauge, if you've got 6psi it reads normal, less than that and it reads L

even if your oil pump goes out, you don't even need to remove the engine, just the pan...he is ripping you off!

But to remove the oil pan you'll need to raise the engine, at least that's what I had to go through when I couldn't slip the pan out

ya, i just raised the engine a bit with a jack and unbolting the motor mounts. i didnt get the pan all the way out, just had enough room where i could put my hand an a wrench to switch the pump out. wasn't as hard as i thought i was going to be.

to swap the oil pump you would have to get the engine very high or drop the k member. lowering the pan is one thing but pulling the pump and clearing the pickup and checking pickup to pan clearance is another.
