Time for air

I've come to the conclusion that I'm killing myself with Milwaukee impacts and crap, and I'll be painting my car this winter, so... Time for me to get some air out there, those of you with home shops, what are you using for compressors? Needs to have enough grunt to run 3/4 impacts and a HVLP gun without anything crazy happening, and not cost more than 600 bucks or so. :TY:

I picked up this 2-stage 80 gallon unit from Harbor Freight for about $1100 out the door with a 20% off coupon. It's a little more than you want to spend, but this one can almost keep up with my blast cabinet, which is little more than a 1/2" line with a hole in the end of it. It flows 26 cfm @ 90 psi with a max of 175 psi, and so far I'm very impressed with it for the money. It has a Baldor electric motor which is pretty much the industry standard for good electric motors.

I was just looking at that one, it's 220 right? I only have 110 out there, I might need to see how much effort it is to get a 220 plug or two out there.

Yes, it's 220v. Any decent-sized compressor will be. Getting a 220v outlet isn't that big of a deal. I've wired up two in my garage with the help of a friend. You just need to either run a larger breaker to a sub-box in the garage, and then run a dedicated circuit for the 220v outlet, or just run one straight off the main box for the house.

Be prepared to spend some coin on wiring.

i can get the same air compressor from snap on for $950 and it flow 1 more cfm :hammer: i've been pricing it for a while, calling around to see what the best one was for the money and whatever and it turned out to be 968.43 or something close like that. it's probably the best one you can buy, they're nearly the same one. and you can use it all day without problems, we have two at our tech school and they never even turn on and we use them constantly.

but i get special discounts cause of my tech school and from my gramps

i only have one more year of great prices like that so i'm planning on getting it soon, along with one of those cordless impact wrenches(completely unneeded but totally cool) and a couple other things.

if you guys were closer i'd offer to buy it for you and then you pay me back, but i don't have any credit cards or paypal or anything like that.

get a break anyway you can, those prices are ridiculous without a significant discount.

the compressor i was just talking about it $4,130 off the shelf from snap on.

I've got a DeVilbiss 6hp 60 gallon oil lubricated twin cylinder compressor. It keeps up with just about anything I run on it with ease. I got a sweet deal on it though. It's right at 2 years old and a guy lunched the motor on it so I bought it from him for 25 bucks and pulled it out of his shop for him. Took it home and put my 6hp GE Motor on it. I had that with intentions on finding a tank and building a compressor but this was even better... anyways.. something 3hp and above with a good size tank should hold up well with what you need.

I have some serious over kill for a compressor, however it's one hell of a beast. We had it custom made, it can hold over 200, however we always have it at 180, it's about 7 foot tall. It used to be a old compressor for the huge shops back in the 70's. It's one of the huge industrial ones, yea i know, but we got it on a deal, new motor and hole top, so it's not bad :thumb:

we have an old tank of a compressor too. picked it up for $100. its got a 5 horse on it. its way taller than me and looks like its from WWII. we can use the impact on lawn mower blades forever before it kicks on.

ck out lowes and home depot too DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME AND MONEY ON A OILESS UNIT make sure your compressor is driven bya belt! also hose size in important a 1/4" ID hose will work for most tools but 3/8" delivers more volume and that's important for die grinders and impacts too. if your going to be painting don't forget an air dryer and filter

yeah no doubt on that.. if the motor and compressor unit is hidden by plastic casing look under the plastic. Our old compressor at work this older guy who's a pain in the ass got it from home depot, it wasn't a bad compressor but not good for what we need, anyway it was a 25 gallon tank and had a fair sized plastic box on top. it sprung a leak so we pulled it apart and it had a motor about the size of the ones that come on a power wheel jeep. Sucked.
