So I'm needing one last part, besides the misc. gaskets / parts for the PI swap in order to get this done..

And I figure it'd be a good time to do the timing chain kit..

I searched ebay, found a few sets around 170 bucks. I went to advanced auto and theirs was like 280 doll hairs.

Maybe I just need the timing chain..? I'm so broke right now, need to get this swap done! I'm hurtin!

The guides and tensioners will need replacement before the chains i would think. I'm gonna do mine next time the cover comes off but i have talked to a few techs who say these chains are very good and still look fine after 400,000 miles on most cars.

I was looking at that set on ebay for 170 also :)
I forget what Randy was gonna charge me for the set but i think it was closer to like $300 so i didn't do it when i swapped my heads a few yrs back.

I'm not a ford tech but out of the 4.6's i've worked on the only wear I've seen is the stretching of the chains. If your over 100k then, sure replace them, but like if your lower then that, I'd use discretionary judgment.

+1.... when i bought my chains they said the chains are the first thing to go because they strech...

Honestly, just save up your money and do it right the first time.... When i was going to do my PI swap i have brand new cam gears, crank gear, timing chains, valve followers, valve covers, etc. etc. .. .i mean... there's no reason not to... "well i had my timing cover off, but... i was just too lazy."

if your car runs, save your money until you can do it right... if your car is broken down (and your upgrading,) replace the tensioners/guides. If the chains dont look streched, the links all look good, dont replace the chains. If they are broken, you have no choice... i also suggest replacing all the gaskets while you are there... i mean... just replace as much as you can so you dont have to do it again... thats all im saying in this nice long babble...

i would buy an ebay intake... or a gas cap... but nothing that would go on the inside of my motor... especially when they wont even list a brand name....

somethings that are made by small chinese children with no thumbs are okay... such as a headlight knob, a pair of shoelaces... etc. etc. etc. but timing equipment??? i cant beleive we are talking about this... if your chain snaps and you drop a valve into the piston i ASSURE you the first thing out of your mouth wont be: "Well, it was worth saving $90.00..."

Go to "catalog" then put in your year make and model then on the left go to engine then timing and camshafts then pick what you need...

go to google and type in silver state ford parts... for some reason it wont let me link to them...

Definitely go with the OEM equipment there. If you can find new Ford on ebay thats ok but otherwise shop around at your local dealership. If you go to your parts dept and tell them you work at an area dralership in sales or detail they will give you the parts at just over their cost.

Guides/tensioners go before chains on these 4.6's. Police cars/cabs always see them replaces around 120k where afterwards its not uncommon to start hearing some clatter
