Too much power???

If I wanted to run two JL Audio subs that produce 200rms watts a peice, would an Alpine MRP500 be too powerful? The Alpine MRP500 produces 500rms watts at 2 ohms and 300rms watts at 4 ohms. So would that be too much for the two JL Audio subs that produce 400rms together? :dontknow:

you can run an amp below rms, i have a 1000 watt rms amp hooked up to 1 12'' sub that is 400 watts rms

I dont know what you mean by running it below RMS, but a 500 watts RMS Amp thats supplying two subs rated for 400 Watts RMS together is fine. If you look at it this way you are only running each one @ 50 watts more a piece. Now, I however have a 300 watt RMS sub that I put a 600 Watt RMS Amp to and it took 3 days to freeze the voice coil. The amp was only turned up to about 3/4's as well...

I would think it would be fine. Its your volume finger in the end that will kill the subs if you're not careful.

BTW it's 500rms watts at 2 OHM, 250 rms watts at 4 OHM. Assuming the subs are rated at 4ohm then if wired correctly you'll be pulling 250 rms watts off the amp supplying each sub 250 rms watts so you'll be fine. The subs probably have a peak wattage of around 500-700 and the amp peak is 500/1000 depending on the wiring so you're fine. I had my subs in my yellow mustang running 600 rms watts and they were rated for 400 with a max load of 900 and they are just fine.

I would rather give a sub 2x its rms power then 1/2 of it. Keep the signal clean and distortion free and you will be find. Don't crank it up to he point it is popping and clipping as that is when you will do your damage to your speaker.

You'll be fine. If the subs are 200rms, chances are they're 400 or so max. Running a little over isn't a bad thing. Just keep the Gain on the amp at a low level.... It's not a volume knob! And clipping is bad.

Probably 4 to err on the side of caution. Look at the amperage the amplifier is going to be pulling then make sure the inline fuse is bigger.

look at the fuses in the amps and add there amperage up. If one is 30 amps and the other is 75, then you need 105 amps of current possibly.

Wait a sec, so how big of a fuse should I use in my inline fuse if my amp has two 30 amp fuses? I sold my last system about three years ago so I'm kinda relearning this stuff again...

The fuse needs to be at the very least what the amp is pulling. So you'd need at the veeery least a 60. Most install kits will come with bigger fuses than what you need, which is good.

Most kits run a 100amp fuse. Should be plenty big enough, i've never seen one blow.

ok guys the way alpine and most other brands rates amps at 14.4 volts so with that amp you would be able to get 500 rms at 14.4 volts now most cars run arounf 13.5-13.8 volts when warmed up. Also if you have now power upgades you cant stay at a high voltage. So yes with the right tuning the amp will work great on the subs. And for a fuse i would run a 60 or 80 amp fuse.
