Sup All,

Well I have a question... About 3 months ago I had my 3.73s installed, I had all new bearing and seals done at the same time, Everything was Ford racing parts... About 2 weeks ago I noticed some whining on Decell... I thought at first it may be my gears, but I am starting to think it maybe be my tranny....would a bad T5 make decell noises, also If I am decell'in with it in gear, it's loud, but if I either put the clutch in or pull it out of gear.. the noise is less.. not 100% gone, but very quiet. also noticed a lot of synchro noise when I down shift from either 3, 2 or to first, and it won't go into gear till I get to a slow enough speed... and every once in a while if I am turning a corner and up shift to second it will grind slightly...all this make's me think it's my tranny and not my new gears.

Thought? advice?

Heya Don,

When you put it in reverse does it make a "spooling" sound?

Is the decel. sound similar to the spooling sound?

How many miles? My car has 140k and never had anything done to the T5 so it makes some noise and has since i bought it 3+ years ago. Does it make a lot of noise when driving slow?

Mine make some noise in mostly first and 2nd when slowing down and third makes a little noise when i give it good gas.

"it won't go into gear till I get to a slow enough speed..." This is normal if you are talking about down shifting especially from second to first. I never do that kind of downshift because it is a lot of useless stress when you could just use your brake to come to a stop and if you are rolling already you shouldn't need anything lower then second gear.

The only thing you can do is make sure the fluid is full and fresh or get it rebuilt but i would just drive it until it brakes because it should last a while even though it make some noise.

My car only has 126 K on it... I had to rebuild the rear because the old dude I bought it off beat the crap out it, I didn't realize how bad the car had been beat on till about 2 weeks into owning it, the motor started leaking from everywhere at 2 weeks.. anyways long story.. been told to many times..

To answer some questions:

Yes it make's noise at low speeds... if I am in third it whine's like crazy, 4th ant so bad...5th is a dream... when it come's to down shifting... I normally don't at all, I clutch it and roll till it's slow enough to put into first but the stop or second when I make a turn...because if I try before, it whines and won't let me put it into gear...when in towns, I try to get to 4th as quick as I can and drive it there... but yeah, 1,2,3 all make whining noises when I Accell and Decell....to be honest some days it sounds like a car with Timing gears... you know the one's that whine,

So I will ginger it, and start saving for a new tranny, I may just save and buy new, I do plan on stroker at some point so HD tranny may be the way to go..

Thanks guys :)

I would drain the tranny and put in fresh fluid, whatever is recommended for yours. Should be just ATF Merc/Dex3, and see if anything changes. Low fluid levels will make gears whine, but take care of it before it's too late. I don't think I've a tranny whine from being bad. Usually they start with shifting problems or just grenade. Probably check the fluid level in the rear as well. I still would not discount the gears needing adjustment. When you decell in gear, engine load is adding stress on the rear end. As soon as you hit the clutch, the engine load is no longer there and may change the gear noise you're hearing.

I will have my tranny fluid changed just to be safe... the whine all but disappears when I put the clutch in, it's really bad during Decell while still in gear. I normally pull it right on of gear and coast... it all but is gone when I do that...

Don't worry too much it will last for a while as long as it shift fine and you have good fluid.

I still drag race my car and Auto cross it and it has not got any worse in the last 3 years i have owned it.

A funny thing is last year i had my rear end rebuilt too. had some vibration at high speeds.

94-95 Mustangs should have the rear end rebuilt after 100k miles anyways to freshen it up and it gives you a good reason to get gears.

Okay, thanks guys... I am now pretty sure it's not the rear, I may get someone later to pull the cover off and check that the new gears are fine... but for now, I am gonna do new fluids in the tranny... I would like to have this tranny last at least till fall...then I can pull it off the road and either get the tranny rebuilt, or buy a new one... as always it all depends on money.

Thanks for the reassurance... :)
