Transmission question

Ok, I have a 97 Automatic GT Convertible that seems to have an issue with the transmission. It doesn't slip or anything but seems to hesitate when I put in drive. Reverse immediately starts moving but drive takes a couple of seconds to lock into place. Any idea's what it might be or what I could check? I'm planning on replacing the fluid and filter this weekend and would like to do any repair's while I have it taken apart you know. I've been told that a dirty filter will cause this but I would think that it would be throughout all gears not just drive. As always any help is appreciated. Thanks guys.

What's the color of the fluid?

I think that it's red. I know that the seal on the pan is leaking where they tightened it too much which is why I plan on changing fluid, filter and seal this weekend. The fluid that is leaking looks like it's red from what I recall.

Sounds like its low on fluid. It's a good thing to change the filter while you have the pan off.

Yep, I was definitely going to change the filter with the fluid. Any other suggestions guys? If not then I'll post an update after the service is done. Thanks gearhead and jetsetter!

Look at the condition of your pan when you get it off. Is there metal fragments? The magnet in your pan should have a thin, dustlike collection of metal shavings. Anything larger is a warning sign.

I got busy with trying to get the h pipe off to replace with o/r pipe and didn't get a chance to service the trans. Will get on it Saturday and post an update. Thanks for checking though.
