Let me start off by saying that I have searched not only SN95Forums, but as much of the intarwebz as I can trying to answer my questions before posting. However, I believe that the only person that can help me is someone that's had hands on experience. ;]

I have a '94 GT with the AOD-E transmission. Recently it started slipping in first, and now it's gotten bad enough that it slips into neutral when trying to shift to third. The only way the car is driveable is in second gear. (Obviously I'm not driving it that way... I've just noticed it when I need to move it.) I am examining my options to get the car back on the road, and I'm not sure exactly what my best bet is.

I know where both a 4R70W and an E4OD transmission are, and both are in perfect working order. Has anyone swapped a 2WD E4OD into an SN95, and can anyone tell me if it's similar/easier to swapping in the 4R70W?
To my understanding, swapping in the 4R70W entails keeping my solenoids/sensors/wiring harness and swapping the AOD-E tailshaft/bellhousing to the 4R70W, correct? I may be very skewed on that... but the posts I found were not very descriptive and I don't know a whole lot about transmissions. If someone could point me to a more descriptive AOD-E to 4R70W swap thread, that'd be awesome.
I would really prefer to just find another AOD-E, but apparently they're uncommon in my area. I have yet to find one for less than $700, and a rebuild for the one I have is $800.

And before it's stated, yes I would like a T-5... however currently that isn't an option as this is a shared vehicle. =\

If your car is a pushrod 302, the 4r70w will not bolt up to your block.
EARLY aero crown vics(first 1/2 of '92) ran AOD, or AOD-E trans with the bellhousing for the SBF.
Not sure about the van transmission, though.

Do those pearls around your neck get in the way when you're installing a transmission? I would imagine they would.

The 96-01 explorers came with 302s and 4r70w's. And Im not sure (to lazy to search) but Im sure there is aftermarket support to bolt one up to a 302.

Not entirely true, the 4.6L V8 4R70W won't BUT the 4R70W from a 3.8L V6 will. Obviously if you go that way the internals would need to be improved but at that point you might as rebuild the AODE.

The diesel, 4.9L, 5.4L, 5.8L, 6.8L and 7.5L vehicles always use E4OD's and would be a b*tch trying to install that and make it work with the stock PCM.

I would guess you might have a bad shift solenoid that is failing to activate, or failing to seal when activated OR your front band is worn out.

Forgot about the 'sploders....

And IDK how I would feel about any adaptor plates/etc. in my car. Everyone's different, though.

For the swap, you are correct about swapping over the wiring, etc. The later 4r70w transmissions use a plastic circuit board, instead of the wiring harness, with actual wires.
You'll have to swap over the actual wires, both shift solenoids, the EPC solenoid, and TCC solenoid. Don't forget the factory temp sensor.

You'll also have to swap over your MLPS.

Basically the computer will be looking for certain values(voltage, ohms)from the trans sensors, you gotta keep whichever sensors will be able to "talk" to your stock computer, which will be the ones you currently have. The newer sensors have different values and the trans will not shift.
The older sensors will swap over to the new trans pretty easily. If you are handy, it doesn't require too much, just put everything back where it needs to go and you'll be fine.

I used this site for my swap parts and saved a bunch of dough.....

Hope this helps
