Transmission Woes

My transmission has seen much better days. The clutch sucks, the clutch linkage is wobbly (likely because a bearing is going out), the fly wheel needs to be resurfaced or completely replaced, but the real problem is trying to accelerate from a stop on an incline. The car sputters and comes close to dying all together when trying to take off up hill. It even happens when I get it lots of gas and rev up to 4k before letting off the clutch. I just had the plugs and plug wires replaced as well. What could cause this?

My gas mileage also completely sucks. Could it be fuel pump related?

I didn't install the wires, but I'll definitely check that out. And no, there's no check engine light.

If the wires are installed incorrectly, wouldldn't it have an effect at any speed? The sputtering only happens when I'm taking off up hill from a complete stop. It happens at random on level roads, too, but only from a complete stop.

Alright. I checked the wires. All are connected properly. Any thoughts as to where to go from here?

Check your fuel pressure regulator. Usually if a fuel pump goes bad it just doesn't work (or works so poorly the car is un-drivable). If the regulator is bad, it could be giving the engine the wrong amount of fuel pressure to the injectors causing what you describe.

Would this also amount to horrible gas mileage? I'm getting roughly 150 miles to a full tank, but haven't figured out my exact mpg yet. My wife's 5.9 liter V8 Durango RT gets better mileage. This is pathetic.

(I also do not have service engine light on. Does this mean it could still be the fuel pressure regulator?)

This forum must have seen better days. Seems there's a 5-15 day turn around for responses and new posts. I've only gotten one or two answers from other threads (out of the thousands of questions I have). Am I missing something?

Whoah, 150 miles per tank? Some thing is definitely up with the fuel system in some way.

I got roughly 300-350 miles per tank with my v6.

Fuel pressure regulator, fuel injectors, fuel filter... Things along those lines.

My car was gettig terrible gas mileage when an o2 sensor went bad. It was spitting close to raw fuel from my left tailpipe. It was adding unneccesary fuel becase the sensors were telling the computer that I had more air than the car really was getting. It was compensating for no reason essentially. I had no check engine light for a while, but it eventually came on.

Yes, a bad regulator can equate to horrible fuel mileage. Also, for reference, my V6 (5-speed) gets 400 miles per tank currently doing mostly highway and a little in-town driving. That's pretty much EVERY tank full as well.

Now that is impressive! I drive like a granny and still get completely horrible mileage, so I'm hoping it is's something simple. I also bought the car from the less than reputable dealer, so there's no telling what was done to it before it was sold. Any idea on what I can expect to spend on a pressure regulator? I also know that aftermarket Ford Racing parts are hit or miss, so should I go OEM with this and buy from Ford or are AutoZone parts decent enough to last a long time?

Thanks again for the replies. I like this site, but it seems to be lacking in users for our generation Stangs :(

I always get my parts from Advance Auto, and the regulator there is around $50. I don't trust AutoZone at all, as I used to work there and know how often stuff like that gets warrantied out through them...

Advance sells Borg Warner (BWD) regulators and I've always had good luck with those.

Thanks man. I was worried it was going to be a $200+ part. I like Advanced better, too.
