J.R. would be the best to talk to on this one..

1600 stall is a stock converter so, no props to that one. Tell him he can keep it lol..

The 4R70W offers all of the benefits of the AODE with the addition of a lower first and second gear ratio to help acceleration. Beginning in 1998, the 4R70W also has the Mechanical Diode intermediate one way clutch, and an even better direct input shaft. The 1998 and later have the hardened stub shaft.

The only real differences are the gear ratios, the extension housing bushing and seal diameter.

With the 4R70W your converter is not going to lock-up because the different gear ratios. I have that issue with my AODE. I had the wide ratio gear set put in my AODE so my pcm is not recognizing the gears so it won't lock up. To me, I could careless...I didn't buy the car to have great gas milage.

4R70W

1st = 2.84
2nd = 1.55
3rd = 1
4th = .70

AODE

1st = 2.40
2nd = 1.47
3rd = 1
4th = .667

According to Karl Baumann, AODE/4R70W transmissions to perform reliably in a 350 to 375 horspower application. The 1998 and later 4R70Ws can handle up to 500 horsepower with just the addition of a Valve Body kit/Shift Kit and a self regulating trans cooler.
