Unbalanced Tire?

Bought a new set of tires at 81k miles, supposed to be rotated every 5k and rotated/balanced every 10k.

At 85k miles, took the car into Ford for a couple things. They rotated the tires back to front without me asking, and 1000 miles ahead of schedule.

Since doing that, I've been getting a slight steering wheel shake, mostly noticeable at 45-70 mph. It's not that much, but just enough to notice and thus be irritating.

Curious, is there a chance it could just be a tire out of balance, somehow a result of them rotating them? I can't see how, but the old man seems to think it could just be a tire out of balance. Was thinking of heading over to Discount Tire and starting with a balance before I go looking for suspension issues. FWIW when the car was at the dealer they noted that everything in the suspension was good, according to that courtesy check form they fill out.

Yea I'd check if the tires are outta balance a little first it's the cheapest possible soloution. Then anything after that will be more money like slopyy tie rod ends etc.

strange question, but have you looked at the tires? I had a tire where it started to fail and the steel belts slipped making a bulge on the back side of the tire, towards the fender. For some reason I only really noticed it when I was braking but this was in my truck as well.

Normally they put the worst on the rear, now there on the front so makes sence its shaking. Tire rotations are not that serious imo but most do it every other oil change. Most of us run 245s and 315s and cant rotate them and there fine... Just make sure your alignment is straight and you wont have wear issues out of the front tires

Yeah coming from a Discount Tire employee, if we see any small bends in the wheel or a few of the wheel/tires call for more weight than the others we'll put the worst on the rear. But a good rebalance should clear up your vibration problems, just have them check for bent wheels and out of round tires when they rebalance them.

Right rear FTW! I work at a dealership but understand that 100%. When we get HUGE tires that call for 10oz+ for weight, we rear those tires fast lol.

Stopped by DT tonight, turns out one tire is out of round, so it's being replaced for free (had to order it).

They put an assload of weight on that wheel and stuck it back on the rear, and the shake is gone...glad that's all it was, though it sucks I'll have three evenly worn tires and one new one with more tread.

If you got the cash buy another of the same tire, that way 2 have 2 new, and 2 worn. Then have a spare on the side.

lol wut?

I don't know it it's a separated tire, it looks fine, they just said it's defective and can't balance. Should have the new one in a few days.

Yeah, the only thing is the tires are $170/ea + installation and they have barely 4000 miles on them...they have 10/32" left of the original 11/32", lol...hardly worth replacing another one...that and the wife is ultra pissed for the money I've been spending lately on preventive maintenance because she comes from the typical woman mentality that you don't need to fix or take care of a car until it's broken on the side of the road and you have to shell out even more money for a tow not to mention all the wasted time, after many weeks of wondering if it would get you to your destination as it got worse and worse before it finally shat in the middle of an intersection.

She still doesn't think I needed a starter, because my car still ran. Worst of all, she thinks I like spending money on repairs. Mods, yes, maintenance/repairs, no.

Damnit. After driving it a bit more, while it's definitely much better than before, I do still have an ever so slight steering wheel shake between 55-60 (brakes feel smooth though so not those). What's next? Inner tie rod ends? Balljoints? Nothing more annoying than a steering wheel shake.
