I've dyed many parts without adhesion promoter with no problem. I did the ps of my dash and I peeled it off like sunburn.
Do I need an adhesion promoter on the dash, or more drying time between coats? Humidity is way high here, that might be working against me.

May be more then just the humidity, since it is a dash I am sure there are a lot of oils and protectants that have been on their over the years so you may need a better cleaning to start with

I think I need to scrub with the solvent and a pad until its really dull. I did more scrubbing to get the last bits of dye off, and this morning its looking dull

I consider adhesion promoter a must. I usually wash the parts with dish washing liquid or use Tuff Stuff Multi-Purpose
Cleaner. I use this stuff on everything. Let dry and spray a light coat of adhesion promoter. You can spray adhesion promoter
between coats of paint also.

Re: vinyl dying the dash, help!

Well I did the passenger side again today. sprayed a few light coats of Duplicolor adhesion promoter and did a light coat of black dye. I finished it off throughout the day, and i'm not touching that dash until tomorrow. lol. I hope it works, seems the dash is a little tricky compared to other parts. Ive done so many for my Monte Carlo, and the console for the Mustang seems to be great.

Well, I think its better, but there really isnt any way to tell until i scratch it with something. This damn dash is a pain the ass compared to any other plastic parts I've done before.

no matter what you do it is a temp thing that will need maint and touching up just like your ext does. To be honest the time spent for a temp solution seems like a waste imo. I would rather wait to find the correct color that you do not need to mess with and do it right then to have one more painted part to maint.

find the correct color what? The dye matches pretty perfect, good enough anyway. if you vinyl dye something the right way, its hard to get off unless you just about gouge it. Maybe someday I'll just get a black dash, but in my current situation, thats just not the best way to go.

I took apart the drive side and started scuffing it up, its next!

that has always been what I have seen too. They show it off like it is new for maybe 6 months but after that it will need touching up .

We'll see. All it cost me was the dye and some of my time. I daily drive this car, I just want it done and put back together again at this point. I'm still waiting on the carpet... If I have to get a dash eventually, then cool. I work at Ford, I know plenty of techs that'll tear the dash out put in the new one in no time for a lil cashola :)

so how you gonna do the steering wheel? Gonna get that wrapped?

Nah, I'm going to just get a black steering wheel. I only dyed the dash, and the center console. The console is an 03, so its charcoal black, I needed it BLACK black.

I've had mine painted for 5 months now and it doesn't have one scratch on it. People have kicked it and hit it countless times now and it's taken the hits like a champ.

Bottlefed, thats the kind of response I was looking for! I noticed today that while I nicked a spot putting the vent back in, I bumped another spot and it didnt do anything. I think my prep work might've been shotty in some areas, or I just didnt spray enough adhesion promoter, who knows.

What am I missing about the dash pad?

the carpet pad on top of your dash, they just hadn't seen that before. I hadn't seen one on an sn95 either.
what type of dye did you use? it looks great! and I say that its awesome to dye it yourself and see what the outcome is, no harm in trying and you have an even nicer looking set up to boot. plus it was probably cheaper and you didn't have to go around looking for parts. keep us informed in a couple months how it looks

Ohh, the dash mat? lol. I just ordered it online a couple years ago. It's a must out here in the desert, and it keeps the glare off the windshield from the shiny dash.

Yeah, I think I'll re-prep and touch up some spots, see how it goes. I used SEM dye. Its "Landau black" for my Monte Carlo, but hey, black is black for the most part, it matches great.

I started the carpet today... wrestling with that extra heavy insulated stuff is hard. I got the driver side almost all trimmed up

are you dyeing the carpet too or just replacing? I'm going to be doing some of this stuff next spring so I'm very interested in your outcomes!
