Vortech installed and tuned on my 1994 GT - Runs good, but dyno results are low

I finally got the vortech S-Trim installed on my 1994 Mustang GT this week and got it dyno tuned. The results were a little lower than I expected, but otherwise, it runs pretty good. I installed the following:

Stock long block
Vortech V-1 S-Trim
42 lb injectors
Lighting 90 mm MAF
Anderson Power Pipe
Walbro 255 lph fuel pump

The tune shop put in a conservative tune at first, and the car pulled 268 hp. Then they started tweaking and doing pulls. The power actually dropped down to 248 hp before climbing back up. It wound up with 270 hp. I was expecting somewhere between 300 and 320. So my question is, do you have any idea’s why? The blower appears to be running good. I saw 10#’s at redline. The tuners only let the car sit maybe 5 mins between pulls, so the car was HOT. Outside, it was in the 60's and pouring down rain during the tune. Other than that, I don’t know why the power is not over 300. I do know that when I pulled the upper intake manifold off the car, the runners were coated in hard, black carbon. I could try cleaning the upper end with some seafoam, if you think that’s ok to do or if it would even help.

I'm tempted to just go to the track and see how she does. The dyno sheet won't matter if it's fast. Otherwise, I might try another tune shop for a "second opinion", but I really do think they did get it dialed in correctly. On the street, it feels fast and pushs you back in the seat pretty good.

Any tips or advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

that does seem kinda low, my car makes 325 at 7-8 pounds. have you dropped plugs down a heat range and tried advanceing timin more. i used methenol top help mine so it wouldnt knock, and that really helped out a lot.

I put in new plugs one step colder. I did not mess with the timing. I let the tuners mess with the timing.

I was getting some spark blowout at around 5,300 RPM. I gapped the plugs at 0.035". The tuner said to gap them between 0.030" and 0.032".

Don't you think that might have something to do with it? Why didn't you gap them to where he said?

It was "after the fact". You can't re-gap plugs while the car is sitting on the dyno. :p

It might have a little to do with it, but not 30 to 50 hp worth. At least, I don't think it would.

They'll let you change whatever you want on the dyno, they charge by the hour :)

What was your AFR?

Gap the plugs a little tighter. Can you please provide a COMPLETE list of mods?

However, at the end of the day the track times are what matters.

AFR's are around 11.5 to 11.7.

Other mods would be
8" S&B air filter
Mac Shorties (came on the car)
Off-Road H-Pipe
Flowmaster catback
AEM UEGO Wideband
Boost gauge

That does not seem right at all to me. Your right you should be a lot closer to 300. Like said though, maybe it is just the dyno and it will run awesome at the track. As for the getting 30-50 more hp from the plugs you never know. In another thread a guy got like 60 or so hp from cleaning his maf and doing some other minor maintenance.

Ok. New theory. I was out driving just a bit ago. It's been raining the last 2 days ever since my dyno, so I've never really pushed the car. The car feels fast. However, what I noticed was when I hit second gear hard, the car will not "scratch" into second. The RPM's hover and slowly drop and catch. Also, if I take the car up to about 3,500 RPM, let off, then hit the gas hard, I can get the engine to jump a few hundered RPM's before the clutch matches speed. Soooooo, maybe, just maybe the clutch was slipping ever so slightly on the dyno causing a loss of torque getting to the wheels. What do you think? Does that theory hold water?

I guess I need to go clutch shopping. Any suggestions?

That sounds like it could be a major factor. Do that and regap them plugs.

First........AUTO or 5 Speed (big difference)

Auto....around 23% drivetrain loss or around 165rwhp

5 speed....t-5 dont suck that much..so around 13-15% drivetrain loss or around 187 rwhp

11.5-11.7 AFR...is pretty good, i say thats very conservative but the Dyno shop is trying to keep your motor safe

My guess is your number are pretty close to being right...remember you have a stock LONGBLOCK in which originally it
came with 215 hp....

you have exhaust which helps however i think is the conservative tune that show the power you have

I wouldnt stress about it....if it pulls good and youre happy its all good...also TAKE IT TO STRIP to see how the power translates
to your MPH

btw...i have a vortech V-2 that im installing on a bonestock motor as well but i have an auto..so im not going to expect big numbers but with the AUTO rebuild, stall and gears and good tires, im expecting mid 12's!!!

good luck

Re: Vortech installed and tuned on my 1994 GT - Runs good, but dyno results are

270-rwhp... Not all bad, you figure with the average bolt-on's, you get to maybe 215-225-rwhp at best. If your clutch was slipping it would have been very obvious on the dyno.

I have a KB with 8LBS of boost and AFR 11.5. I'm only making 300.49-rwhp / 378-rwtq conservatively...

Drive it some and see what the old BUTT dyno says...

not to hijack the thread but how are most of you guys getting your cars to the dyno? I doubt my car will idle let alone run after I finish up my blower install. I'm installing a v2, cobra upper and lower, 70mm tb, LMAF, 42lb inj, and 255 pump... I need to contact my tuner to see if he can get me a chip with a base tune just to drive the car to the dyno...

just curious what some of you guys have done.

Ive already got a xcal2 so my tuner is actually writing me a tune for 42 lbers, the 255 pump, PMAS so I can get over there without a problem...of course its only 3 miles away

what do you think about driving it 40-50 miles to the tuner though...? I mean, I have no intention of ragging it out or anything. I'd be fine with limping it all the way there if need be.
