Hello. I have a 95 GT with 3.73 gear and I went to change the gear tooth in the transmission out today and I went to pull the VSS (i think it was it) out and there was a cover on it with a silver magnetic tip on top and I couldn't get the cover off. I pulled VSS (i think it was it) out thinking I was gonna see a plastic gear tooth and swap em out but there wasn't one.

All help is appreciated and I did search the forum and web but didn't quite find what I was looking for.

I have the correct gear tooth but do I have to buy a speedcal if that's what it comes down too? I'd rather be 10mph off and spend only $10-$15 vs $99 and still not correct.

Pictures of VSS loacation would helpful.

Sorry for noob question as i'm still learning more about the mustang world.

Thanks!

The VSS is located at the rear of the tranny (on the output housing).

I can't be certain, but from what you describe, it almost sounds like you removed the OSS, which is located about the middle of the tranny.

The OSS is black in the following pic. The VSS is towards the rear of the tranny (hard to see in the following pic):

Hope this helps,

-Alan

Oppps....yep guess that would make a difference LOL. but you had them labeled correctly (for the automatic). In any case, the VSS should be darn near at the very end of the transmission.

Technically the Speedcal is more accurate and more reliable than the speedo gear as the 23 tooth speedo corrects 100% for 3.55 gears, just a little fyi.

I am running the speedcal and according to my GPS it is pretty much dead on. I see them for sale used from time to time over on Corral. I got mine on ebay for like 50 bucks.

Well, not exactly correct. The AODE tranny with the 7 tooth drive gear which came with the 3:27 rear gear option will be 100% accurate with a 21 tooth driven gear and 3:73 gears.

It doesn't 'pull' out. There is a bolt, 11mm wrench or socket fits it, you remove the retainer bolt, the entire assembly comes out. You just broke it in two. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. bottom part is metal and has a retainer with the bolt in it, top part is plastic and the speedo cable pushes into it and the wires plug into it. They are not designed to come apart, if they do, it's time to go visit Advance auto and get a new one.

Nothing came apart when I pulled what-ever part out the transmission. I just plugged it back in the socket and bolted it back in place. That was only the 1 bolt thing I saw on the drivers side of the trasmission unless missed the other.

what year is your trans, and what year is your car, and why are you replacing the speedo gear, this is sounding fishy. something's not right here.
