Maybe anyone is familiar with this problem...

I had a shop replace my harmonic balancer last friday because it was going bad. Replaced it with a new FRPP piece.

I must say the engine revs smoother and shifter shakes less at idle and highwayspeed, so that's good.

However, since the change, the car has been making a annoyingly loud screaching noise comming from the front of the engine. It only does this the first 15 min of driving and steadily gets more quiet as the car warms up. The sound also gets faster with revs, so it's def something rotating..

Sounds like metal on metal too, not the usual belt squeek some cars have when they're started + my belt is 2 months old..

So I have every reason to believe it's the new HB.. Anyone else experienced this? Should it go away after a few days of driving? Do I need to lube anything?

:dontknow: stupid cars

video added today:

squeeky harmonic balancer

video doesn't do it justice though, it's louder and more high pitched in person..

Maybe the HB is rubbing on the front of the timing chain cover? or the timing marks are bent in slightly. wierd.

it might be a distributor death squeal. start the car and while it's squeeling push a little in the dizzy cap.(front/back/side to side

Ill try that thanks!

If its rubbing the timingcover slightly, why would it go away when hot? And would it eventually wear off enough to become quiet again?

can't really see if it hits anything, not the timingmarks I think.. maybe the bolt on the waterpump..

Anyway, it's not the disty, I'm sure of that!

Re: weird noise after HB replacement

it would go away when hot because metal expands, and the crank will grow some, therefore not rubbing on stuff. I would look for metal shavings. its gotta be something that has to do with the HB, i would think.

I'm sure it is the HB.. I'm hoping it will shave off enough so it stops sometime soon..

Oh ya, you guys pay out the A## for fuel over there. I would call them and ask them about it, and see what happens.

Re: weird noise after HB replacement

what about the idler pulley... those make some pretty weird noises when they start to go bad. Or maybe the distributor as mentioned earlier.

I doubt the HB is touching anything.

I've WD40-ied every other pulley and checked the disty.. but it really seems to be comming from near the HB i'm afraid..

I wonder if the pulley on the front of the balancer is tight. also, are the timing marks done in silver or white paint?

wierd. Did you see any rub marks on the HB? Is the HB rubbing on the oil pan? It does sound like a pulley though.

I thought I saw something on the balancer where the timing marks should be, but I figured it was timing marks. it sounds like it is rubbing against a piece of metal that is sticking out like a tab, so maybe the timing marks, or the flange for the front main seal. In fact, does the car make one long squeak after the engine is shut off? I wonder if the front main seal (timing cover to HB seal) is going bad, my car squeaked like that for a while until I replaced that.
