What exactly is this?

So, anyone with a 4.6l motor will recognize this. I have read many posts where people say to get rid of it, and simply put a piece of plain hose in it's place. My question is, what exactly is this thing? Why would Ford put it in if it is not needed? Anyone?

its a resonator.

That's one of those if it ain't broke dont fix it things...
I haven't the slightest idea what its purpose is, especially being between the intake pipe and IAC.. maybe the box does something to the airflow?

I believe its got a simple one way valve in that little box.
