What is this for? and Where does this leak look like its from

So I pulled off the flywheel cover piece of aluminum so I can change my rear main seal while I'm swapping the trans. Does anyone know what this gasket is for?

And, where does it look like the leak is the rear main or the pan gasket? I'm changing the rear main anyway just in case.

Looks like someone tried to plug the rear main seal leak with some gasket maker on the starter index cover lol.

Ok, changed the rear main, still leaks... Looks like I'll be doing a pan gasket in the near future. how hard is that to do?
