wmfateam getting his under 16yo son a project car (reference the Post a Pic of your Latest Purchase thread) gave me an idea for a thread. Just hope it hasn’t been done before.

What was your first car? Whether you bought it, it was handed down to you, shared it with siblings or your folks ponied up. Whatever.

I’ll start things off:

I’m the youngest of 3 boys. In 1977 @ age 16, my oldest brother got an orange 1974 Pinto that he subsequently put A60’s on the front staggered with D60’s on the rear. I credit him for opening the world of modifications and aftermarket upgrades up to me. Now…Let’s see who remembers THOSE sizes!

Two years later, my middle brother when he turned 16, bought a used, maroon 1976 Pinto that came with dish mags and therefore was MUCH cooler! LOL
Well, guess who ended up with the maroon Pinto when he muscled up to a 340 Chrysler POS? Got it from him for pocket change (in today’s $$)!! Drove that Junior and Senior year in high school and thought I was pretty hot shit because I had wheels, earned money scooping ice cream at Baskin & Robbin’s (all my friends enjoyed me working there), and was able to take my high school sweetheart out Saturday nights, Homecoming and 2 Proms! Life was simple. And good!!

Being exposed to my brothers’ enthusiasm early on for cars got me started on cars, too. The rest is history!
A 1988 GT foxbody, was t top, rest in peace….

Well, at least you had it. Many ‘88s (sadly) have long since suffered the same fate :-(

Parents got me a 1985 Bronco II when I was 13 or 14 to fix up by the time I was 16. It ended up being a super turd, but we had fun with it around the farm. I ended up with a fullsize 95 Bronco when I turned 15. It was pretty nice, fairly low mileage for the age and super clean but ended up with my 95 Mustang GT when I was 16 and had to get rid of the Bronco. We had a ton of fun in the Bronco, my subbox in the back acted like a 3rd row and we'd ride 8-9 deep to Sonic after school all the time. I'm struggling to find pictures of it online after photobucket ate shit years ago.

Let's see if this works:

My first car was a 1980 Mustang Ghia. silver with a blue leather interior, sunroof and the 2.3 with an auto. I got it when I was 14, and it was the carrot that my parents dangled to keep my grades up. By the time I was 16 and it was ready for the road, it got a 79 Pace car nose, an 86 GT rear wing, a set of TRX wheels, new silver paint, and a new carpet.

My first car was this 2002 V6 / 5-speed in True Blue. My cousin bought it new with her recent college graduate discount in Corpus Christi. I bough it from her sometime around 2012. The engine ran absolutely perfect the whole time I had it, and the only thing that ever happened was the driver side ball joint collapsing on my way to work one day.

65 Biscayne got it when I was 15. Swapped the manual 3 speed for a th350 with a ratchet shifter. Added dual pipes and centerlines. Wish I had it now. Wrong car for a kid. Sold it and bought a rio red 95 GT in 1998.

My first car was a '65 Chevy II roller that I traded a 4-wheeler, Ruger 10/22, and some cash for. My dad sourced a worn out 350 for it and he and his buddy did the install. I got to drive it approximately twice (I was 15 at the time) before I decided I "needed" to get in a truck because all my friends were driving lowriders. So, it got traded in on a new '90 Toyota truck. Base model, 4 speed, and rubber floor liner (no mats lol). Every time I see my dad's friend he gives me grief for getting rid of the Chevy II. It was clean, no rust. It needed an interior refresh but was a solid car. I kick myself for getting rid of it.

my first vehicle was an 89 ranger with the 2.3L 4 cylinder dog of an engine. It claims it made 100 hp and 133 tq but I think that was maybe on race fuel or some other way as that seems like 2x as much hp as it had. I remember being on the highway in Indiana which is pretty flat but if got a little hilly I had to put it in 4th and wind it out to keep it over 55.

Small world. I did a resto-mod on a ‘64 Chevy II before I got the Cobra. Only pitfall: it had 2 doors too many!

A bitchin' '79 Plymouth Horizon. It was a rabbit with a Plymouth badge. The only street race I was ever in was in that car. Back in the day in Denver crusin' Colfax was a big thing (circa '85). I stopped at a light with two buddies in the car, next to me pulls up another Horizon with 3 dudes in it. We all start laughing and when the light turns green we unleash the fury of a combined 160? Hp. A don't remember who won but we reached blistering speed of maybe 40mph.
The first car I ever bought was a '60 beetle. Wish I still had that. I loaned it to my sister and she ran it out of oil, it ended up getting towed and by the time I found out the impound fee was way beyond what my wallet could afford.

Great story! Damn shame about the V-dub. How much of a kick in the pants would that be to kick around in? Cheers!
