I think if it comes up over 1500 i'm going to cut my losses. Thanks for the opinions, and the knowledge of this having happened before. It decided it wanted to come out of gear today, and it starts in neutral but it's idling kinda rough and wont go into gear unless it is off. When I put it in gear then try to start it it turns over and jerks forward but wont start. I'm getting it towed to a shop my regular mechanic recommended tomorrow and will see how much they estimate the cost of repairs at.

All I was saying is the problem seems to be simply a clutch which is something that will go out eventually. They wear down and have to be replaced. A clutch job shouldn't be $1500 unless you're getting a happy ending every day its in the shop. Trying to "cut your losses" with another used car is silly because you don't know any hidden issues when you buy it. You might get out of a clutch job on this one and have a rearend on the way out in the next one. Its a lot easier to fix what you have then to start all over with a different one.

All of this is true and i know the clutch should only be around 600, but like i said if it's more than the clutch, if i really messed something up in the tranny or engine or something I just don't see it being worth putting into a car that still needs body and paint work done. I don't have a suitable garage, equipment or experience for DIY painting or body work and i hear laser red is an expensive color so im figuring at least 2k for that as the gran prix was 1500 for paint and very minor body work. I'm just thinking that at a certain point money wise it's going to be smarter to look for a new car that doesn't still need me to dump money in for that stuff. While i see the point that a new to me car would have hidden problems i'm sure this car still has some problems just waiting for me to fix one so another costly one can pop up. It's been like that since i got the car and i really didn't mind because it gave me the chance to learn how to do the things myself that could be accomplished in my driveway, but the problems got more costly and the car had more time parked for each one as they came, which was fine because i had a back up car but like i said that car won't be here for much longer and i can't have a car that is down for more time and needs more money each month like this car has been. Looking at it's patterns i just think if it gets expensive on this repair with the pattern this car has had it'd be time to move on. Without the discounted parts my moms fiance used to get i see this car becoming a money pit. It's already needed a mass airflow, water pump, serpentine belt, a pulley that was a bitch to get (ford wanted to sell me a $200+ assembly if i recall correctly), a distributor, brake lines, and brakes. Without the cheap parts, extra car, and him teaching me how to do most of those in our driveway it would've cost me at least double what i've put into it and i would've been without a car to get to school and work. While i know just as much can go wrong with another car something tells me more will go wrong with this one in the future. But buying a new car would only come into serious thought if this gets really expensive to fix this time.


So let me ask what price would be too expensive to fix a car you paid $1500 for that still needs laser red paint and body work?

Well , for the most part everything you have listed are petty common issues. So it dosent seem as if its really been a bad car. If you buy another 15 year old stang your probly goin to be doing the same thing to that one as well. Whats so bad about the body and paint , all I can see is the small pic in your sig and that looks good.

Paint is worse than this now. Pic was taken in july i think moments before my serpentine belt disintegrated and the water pump did uncomfortable things to itself

Those two pics are from "good" angles and the passenger side of the car is pinkish I've tried waxing/polishing/buffing the parts that aren't ruined and chipping but the whole front bumper is chipping almost the whole hood is free of clear coat along with most of the top of the passenger side fender.

I know that but the point of this tread was not for me to complain about things going wrong with the car, I was just trying to get an opinion on what point you guys think it would no longer be worth it to fix the car.

Ended up getting it fixed. Needed a clutch and flywheel and is now going from the transmission place to my regular mechanic to get an exhaust leak fixed and the power steering checked out (it went heavy when i was trying to get it out and still is). This is costing a lot more than i think the car is worth but i only had limited say in if it got fixed or not as I'm not paying for most of it.
