what kind of problems did you have out of them?
Well, when I first set the heads up, I put the rocker studs on without the guideplates (didnt have them yet), so I could measure my pushrod length. Found the right length, everything was great. Ordered my new guideplates and pushrods together. Put the pushrods in to re-verify the roll out on the valve tip, and the engine locked up. I found this to be weird. I compared the new PR to my adjustable. they were the same, so I put the adjustable PR back in to double check.
Here was Problem #1...
The stud platforms/bolters/mount points... whatever you want to call them... were too tall! With the guideplates installed, the rockers bottomed out!
So that pissed me off slightly. Found a remedy for the situation, and carried on.
I put the whole top end together, get everything all set and ready to go. oil is primed, all wiring is done, all hoses connected. I start filling the coolant... Every time I poured some into the radiator, it would almost instantly dissappear. Another oddity!
I didnt know why until I saw it literally cascading down the front of the engine!
The heads are designed to line up with a 289 intake manifold. the EFI 302 manifolds have larger coolant passages, which actually lay PAST the heads...
So ok, no problem. Change out the gasket for a 1250 (recommended gasket anyway). Well, it still leaked! I ended up having to get a local shop to fill the corners of my intakes coolant passages. Not cool!
Finally get the intake back, put it all on, fill the coolant (which finally stated in). Start the car... holy friggin valvetrain noise!!! After about 7 attempts to re-adjust the rockers, and never truely being able to get the rockers straight on the valves, I bought some adjustable guideplates. The new guideplates show up, I remove the rocker studs, and see this...
Look at the exhaust stud hole on the far left. Does that look like its anywhere NEAR being in the correct location?
I finally got fed p and sent them back to RHS. They did not have any more Iron 180cc heads in stock at that time, so I paid $200 and they sent me 200CC aluminums. When those came in, I VERY carefully inspected them... just to find the exact same faults that I saw in the iron heads. I called the rep at Comp Cams, they sent me a UPS return sticker and sent ANOTHER set of 200CC aluminums out to me. Which I promptly took out of the box, photographed... and stuck them on ebay.
Good Riddance!
I then went and spent $650 on a used set of Canfield heads, and really wish I had spent the money up front and just bought them from the start!
