Greetings Pony Fans,
I'm asking for the widest tire you can put on the rear of a 2000 GT without any rubbing or clearance issues. I'm gonna run a staggered set up using 18 x 9 up front and 18 x 10 on the rear. Using 275/40/18 on the front and I need some recommendations on the widest tire I can mount on the rear.

275/40 is too tall in my opinion. I'd go with 265/35 up front.
You can easily fit a 305/35 on the back with no rubbing (may need to flip the quad shocks)
315s will sometimes rub. Some tire manufacturers are actually more narrow than others. Nitto, for example, tends to run more narrow than a Mickey, BFG, Toyo etc, so a 315 Nitto would fit I would imagine.

I run Nitto 555 265/35 and MT ET street SS 305/35
On 18x9/10

I ran 315/30s(I think they were 30s) 18" for years with no problems. The wheels actually came with 335 sumitomo's on them(I got them used for a deal) and they would fit but would rub on hard corners.

I'm running 315/35/17 Nitto on the rear. Flipped the quad shocks. No issues other than an occasional rub when turning uphill and it isn't smooth, but I tend to know where it will happen and can "go easy" in those spots to avoid it.

the 335 sumitomo's sucked. Rubbed the inside and had no traction and didn't even make good smoke when ya burned them. They were just no fun at all.

had 315 35's 17 on both my new edge and my sn95 with no issues. you have to also know the offset of the wheel to make sure of no rubbing.

A question to ask is why? Are you having traction problems in the rear? These cars tend to push pretty hard right up until the rear end finds any reason to go into snap oversteer. No amount of tire fixes that. Adding tire width looks good for sure but it is not necessary or helpful until the suspension shortcomings have been addressed. A 3-link w/ phb and C/O conversion would deliver so much traction you’ll have to relearn how to drive it.

Ah. Snap oversteer. I don’t miss those days and @r3dn3ck is right. I found myself relearning how to drive my Mustang after installing a torque arm and panhard bar. Coupled with a set of sticky 315/30r18’s, I can now take 90° corners at speeds that don’t make sense.

Ask @lwarrior1016, I demonstrated this for him.

Here’s what MM 3-link + PHB + CO’s feels like: 45mph oh shit I missed the corner and I’m in the middle of the intersection… psych. /me makes 90deg right without even barking the tires.
