Common!

Simple fix too!

Drain fluides, clean old gasket material, buy new aluminum rear diff cover and rtv it back on, add good fluid back in, get buddy to snap a pic of your nasty burn out.

That totally won't work, everyone knows a pic won't fix it.

It requires a proper burnout VIDEO for the repair to be complete you silly lil'man!!!

Without a proper video the repair will fail and he'll have to start all over!!!!

Guys.......Thats a rear main engine seal leak.

Its a common leak but not an easy repair. You have to pull the transmission. You can keep driving it, just keep a close eye on your oil level. Unless youre ready to get it fixed, then go yank the transmission out and change the seal.

That happens a lot, unfortunately you have to find that out the hard way on this go around. That happened to me also accept mine turned into a rear end rebuild when the car was "perfect".

Its a cheap and easy fix...(when you take off the trasmission) Probably an afternoon job if you are mechanically inclined. But as lwarrior said if its not too bad just leave it and keep an eye on your oil level from time to time.

That really isn't to bad man I am pulling my tranny after dealing with a shop doing two bad clutch installs and you really don't need that many tools plus this is a good opportunity to rehab the clutch and related components a new clutch install really isn't to spendy most of what you get qouted at shops is their labor. To be honest maybe the guy didn't know about the rear main seal leak? Either way easy fix man these guys are more then willing to guide you and have great advice I wouldn't be to upset with the owner. Good luck with the car man!

Here is a nice comprehensive guide so you can wrap you're head around the diagnosis and what it would take to get to the rear main

It could but not very likely. My buddy used 5w30 Valvoline conventional, and switches to 5w20 Mobil 1 synthetic. He noticed a few drops here and there. Under looked the same as yours, and only lost a 1/4 of a quart between oil changes. And he would get on it sometimes. He just kept drip pan or cardboard underneath it. Didn't address it.

Some people go forever with out having issues and some people report looking a quart to a quart and a half or more between oil changes. It's nice to have a clean bottom so you don't get messing while working underneath and keeps the back of the car clean...

Personally unless you have the patience and the tool and time to do it, go for it... Other wise my v6 had a rear main seal leak for 5 years and looked worse... But I lost maybe 1 quart between oil changes and that's if I was beating the living s*** out of it. Lol

Also 10w30 is kinda thick in these cars... Might have a tiny bit more than usual but not much. Keep an eye on it

If it's any consolation, mine leaks there and I just have to top it off every couple hundred miles. Haven't had any problems in the last year or so

My car had a leak there that developed after I bought it, 127,000 mile 97 Cobra. I figured it was the rear main seal.

I bought a nice clutch, lightweight flywheel, Ford throw out and pilot bearings, input and output shaft seals, a new clutch fork and new rear main seal.

I replaced the rear main and oil still dripped from the back of the pan... WTF!

I ended up finishing the clutch job on a Saturday then pulled the K member and replaced the oil pan gasket and put it all back together on Sunday.

It was a ton of work but now My car does not leak...

If you don't mind a drip it's not a big deal but that kind of thing drives me crazy.
