hi guys,

i recently installed the chrome rings on my cluster in the cobra. i drove it around the first night and all was well, then tonight i get in it and well i was driving(about 2 mins down the road) i smelled something getting hot(like wires). so i pulled into the first driveway i saw and shut the car down, checked under the hood and noticed i could only smell it inside the car. after the smell went away i started the car back up and turned the lights back up drove about 400 yards and smelled it again, so i pulled over and shut the lights off and the smell went away.so like the badass im not i did a pretty impressive 180(just thought id throw that in there) and went home with no lights.

has anyone ever had this problem before?

any ideas what it could be?

you didn't run some ghetto wiring through the car like they did lol. you put in chrome rings. you probably pinched one of the cluster wires, pull her back out and look and see if there are any burns.

No lights? ...burning smell??

Your head light switch may be fouling and burning up...Replace it and if it does it again then it's time for the fog light mod.

My friends 5.0 has been sitting for 2 years because of this, I keep telling him to do the damn fog light mod but he wont listen. (not internet savy either) Eventually he will sell it to me and I'll piss him of by fixing it.

It seemed like the lights and gauges were still working, you were probably just heating up the wires. It is possible to save a pinch if you catch it in time haha. I've done it before.

are you sure that the needles were clearing the rings you installed? Go out during the day and make sure that they are not binding up and getting the motors that drive the needles hot.

+1 the unit's behind the needles have been discontinued by ford, The only way to fix them is to purchase the right diode or resistor from radio shack, pull the out solder out and resolder in the new parts...or buy a new cluster.

I have had mine for a couple of years and love them. I also painted all the flat black areas on my dash gloss black so it looks a little bit different from everyone elses.

ehhhhh i found the problem today.......i tore the dash all apart and found nothing wrong.....turned the lights on and smelled it again, but this time i saw a little smoke up front and one of my hid fogs shut off. at that point i pulled the ballest and saw that it had shorted out and almost lit on fire. i talked to xenon today about it and they are going too send me a brand new set and give me my money back!!!!!
