Have seen guys running it in here... considering Royal Purple 10W30 for the next change. Thoughts? No one seems to comment on whether it's a good idea or not

You will be fine using 10w30 oil. When I was working on the police cruisers that is all we used on the 96 - 98 model cars and had no problems and they had the same motor as us.

i have 168k miles, and i use 5w30. next oil change im dropping down to 5w20

I did exactly this on my old '95 Marquis with (at the time) ~71K granny miles. Oil consumption increased noticeably when I did, so I went back to 5W30. But as with all things, your results may vary. (95's were known for bad valve stem seals anyway)

My main reason for wanting to go 10W30 is to see if it helps with how much oil I seem to be using (quart every 1000-1200 miles). In the next month the car is also getting Seafoamed.

it says to use 5w20 from the factory :dunno: i use 5w30 cause it's more reasonable for the temps here.

IMO, The factory uses the 5W20 for things such as "emissions compatibility". fuel economy etc....therefore to meet certain EPA requirements so that the engine gets a "pass", and they can produce vehicles with that engine in it. They dont necesarilly care about the longevity of that engine.
I know the 03-04 Cobra engines were filled with 5W20, but I would rather step up to the 5W30 instead.

And if you compare 5W20 and 5W30, the 5W20 is piss thin.....

Ford has OK'd 5W20 in everything back to 1987.

Thanks to all for the input, putting 10W30 in next week.

Put the 10W30 in today... man the car needed it 4600 miles on the last round of Mobil 1 and the oil was pitch black. Went with Quaker State High Mileage. The goal is just to see if I can get it to use a little less oil.

Car is running great btw.

The thickness of the oil does not mean it's weaker or stronger. Run whatever the manufacture has listed and adjust it to your needs as needed. If you decide to run a synthetic go with a higher weight as synthetics run thinner then conventional oil.
