back in the day distributors had a vacuum advance, you would set the initial timing WO vacuum
after set plug back in , vacuum would advance on acceleration
That's what I grew up doing. By the way, the proper terms are "advance" and "retard" in reference to adjusting ignition timing. :D

A friend is going to help me set the timing thur night right now it runs but a lot of hesitation when you try to pick up the throttle and I know the timing is not right. I’ve just advanced and retarded at some, but it’s right in the middle now so I’m just waiting for Thursday night to get it set.

DOODS!
That last factory I worked,....you know, the one that made ford intake manifolds.....My supervisor had a mentally challenged son and DESPISED the word "retard" regardless of its context. I just made damn sure to delete the word from my vocabulary while in the building! I watched my supervisor climb in an asshole one time when the word was used in a derogatory way. I figured that was not how I wanted to get on his bad side. The asshole eventually got fired for petty shit that most over look.

Set timing now new prolbem runs at very high idle and heats up fairly quick also headers start to glow temp was up to 3/4 on gauge my friend checked the idle air control valve he thinks that’s bad he checked a couple ways with ohlm meter and pin to chassis he said wasn’t right and while running he unplugged it and nothing happened any thoughts?

temp is fine
the rev up is normal as long as it drops to 700 rpm idle
if it not dropping to 700 there is a adjustment screw on the back side throttle plate
and yes the idle air control valve could be hanging
