Lots more but if you’ve followed me on this Forum, you know how I am about my car. I’m selling it because I have been put through the wringer and have been jumping through hoops to comply with all the CARB rules, regulations and horseshit. I just spent $1,800+$350 install for 4 MagnaFlow cats that match what was in there and that passed smog for the last 6 years. Now I come to learn that the cats they require are not only longer, but will run me another
$1,350+tax/shipping (no refund or any credit from MagnaFlow < 50 miles on them), are a 2” diameter vs the 2.5” in there now, and are 10” and 16” long vs the 9”x5” in there now. I’m frickin done with CA crap, so the first 10k gets a car with more than twice that into it.

If out of state, you come get, bring a truck because I have a huge box of parts or pay to have it all shipped.

I say we all collaborate together and find all and any type of catalystic converter. Weld them together into a system that you can bolt in for carb testing. We shoot for like 6 cats on each side. Who cares if the cats come from a beetle or camry, ....just weld that shit together.

Cats are probably old AF and to find an OEM set in pristine condition ready for inspection would be tough.

But you can definitely stitch together a series of Summitt cats or from wherever to get it to pass. And finding a used O2 pump to inject fresh air into it will surely help pass it.

Or just move to Florida.

I suppose it’s “possible”, but that would mean having a 2” system + 4 new cats (about $1500) fabricated at a muffler shop ($$$) to replace my 2.5” system that the car is tuned for. So I’m not even sure how the smaller diameter tubing would effect everything

I wish I could Frankenstein a system to swap in and out but in CA CARB has the exact setup you have to have just to begin smog testing. In my case, it HAS TO BE certain cats for the FR/FL; then 2 different cats RR and RL. And you have to PROVE it by them visually seeing the stamped numbers on each cat and, in my case since I bought 4 new cats, show a receipt showing the correct cats as assigned by CARB.

It’s f’g RIDICULOUS what CA has come to. And we can thank that asshole governor of ours

Can you not get it tagged somewhere else that's not as strict? Is it all of California or just certain counties? Have a friend in another state to register it? Just spitballing ideas.
My buddy who lived in Dallas ( emissions required) had his Cobra registered at his dad's address, problem solved.

If it weren’t for our 2 grandkids (5 and 2), we’d be long gone. We’re both sick of it. So many moving out, other states raising their prices too

Oh, you definitely could. Just be cautious from Neptunes Net south to Malibu on weekends. Cops-o-plenty!
I’ve seen groups of Supercar Clubs motor by and they make themselves known, especially just north on PCH by Point Magu: Esses then a 1.5 mile straightaway. That’s where they typically open em up. The extension of the 23 south, aka Decker Cyn will test even the best skilled. Goes from the Thousand Oaks/Westlake area off the 101 fwy up and over the hill into a few choice roads that dump down into Malibu.

We've had a huge influx of Californians here in AZ for years now.

You won't encounter any problems other than being stuck behind a rented RV going 15mph below the posted limit & getting fat off the delicious Mexican food available all up the coast. The struggle that California residents have with registering older (or modified) cars has everything to do with how emissions laws are implemented for purposes of registration and that doesn't apply to visitors from out of state.

There's legislation currently in the state senate - sb1392 "Leno's law 2.0" - that provides some exemptions but it's a dumb and inconsistent bit of legislation because it provides exemption for pre-1980s vehicles and then rolls annually until 1986 at which point it stops again for no reason. Vehicles made after 1986 get a partial exemption if they are over 35 years old so a 1995 Mustang would be eligible for the partial exemption in 2030 but I think the visual inspection requirement remains so it wouldn't help Daryl even if he parked the car for 4 years.

In my opinion cars over 20 years old make up a small enough portion of the total transportation sector that their exhaust emissions are irrelevant in the big picture - it's a problem that tends to solve itself and the sensible thing would be to federally exempt any 20+ year old noncommercial car from emissions or make a federal minimum standard anyone can meet like "must have a functional catalyst and a muffler" just to avoid absolute wankers ruining it for everyone. That's coming from someone who values clean air and generally supports laws which protect the environment.

Here in AZ we can get classic car insurance which makes covered vehicles emission exempt.
