1998 v6 auto overdrive issue

So, now that I have a mac dual exhaust on my sixer it goes into that drone sound when it shifts into overdrive and the lockup kicks in. The exhaust drone changes with rpm so Im very aware of rpm changes. So, what is happening is that when cruising in od it will sort of pop out of od slightly and then back in. I can hear it in the exhaust and If I look at the tach I can actually see the needle go up a tiny bit. It does this every 30 seconds or so while cruising with no real load on it. If I give it a bit of gas just to put some load on it but not enough to knock it out of od and lockup, it wont happen. If I turn off od there is no problem. Otherwise the transmission works and shifts fine. Does this sound familiar to anyone? It probably has done this all along but I never noticed it until the exhaust was installed, thats how subtle it is.

your overdrive is going out on the car. possible the solenoid for the over drive.

that or your fluid is low

The fluid level is good. Is the solenoid something that could be replaced by dropping the pan? Or is it something that requires a full disassembly. Im gonna do a fluid and filter change soon.

How many miles are on it? And as far as the solenoid, no it is actually inside of the trans. behind the "brain"

I was also thinking of adding a tranny cooler. Should I make it inline with the radiator cooler or should I bypass the rad cooler completely?

You have well over 200K on the odo already. Putting a transmission cooler on at this stage in the game would be pointless, and in my opinion, it would pretty much just be a waste of money. Transmission coolers are good for trucks that pull loads and cars that race. Most of the heat that's generated in an automatic transmission is from the torque converter. You shouldn't have a problem.

I see your point. Its just that Ive found a few threads out there with the same problem where it was solved with a fluid/filter change and the addition of a cooler. It seems like my problem doesnt start until the car is warmed up. So I figured that keeping the temp down might get me some extra life out of this thing. Its like $40 bucks so It wouldnt be too bad on the wallet.
