Ok i have been searching the board and there is one thing i haven't seen answered anywhere. With my Chevy 8 1/2 10 bolt with a 2.56 in it if i wanted to go up to a 3 series gear i had to get a new differential. Is this the same for the Trak Lok in the Ford? Most of the posts i have seen people just talk about rebuilding the trak lok and putting on new gears. Can i go from a 2.73 to a 3.73.....or possibly 4.10 the more i read....without having to change the differential?

Very nice makes changing gears a much better deal. Was looking at about $700 for my wagon since i needed a new carrier and everything. Gotta love the Ford :thumb:

if you never plan on putting a roots style supercharger
on your car go with 4.10 . you will be very happy.
only drawback is your top speed will be reduced.

Yeah but who makes top speed runs in their Mustang anyway.

Top speed doesn't bother me i just want some respectable 1/4 mile times :) i plan on driving this a good deal is the 4.10 a gear i can live with? Most of my driving is around town, my tripe to work is only 6 miles. i guess in reality it probably will only make like 600-700 rpm difference over the 3.73 so its probably worth the added ooomph

3.73s....I think theres a point where your spinning and going through gears so fast that your not improving your times unless your a hell of a driver

FRPP 3.73's are the best balance between street and strip.
They also don't ruin your MPG like the FRPP 4.10's will.
I had the FRPP 4.10's in my old mustang and got terrible MPG.

Don't fear the gear. Get some 4.10s.

I went from a 3.42 to a 4.11 in my Z28 and it was SO MUCH NICER to drive. No more slipping out the clutch for days, no more excessive wheelspeed... overall just a lot more pleasant.

Of course the T56 has a really tall first gear and an extra overdrive.

Also, if you drive in town a lot you will get better MPG from a steep gear like a 4.1X because you don't have to boot that turd to drive it in town. I've got 2.73s in my GT and I'm pulling my hair out driving in town (where I drive the most). The most I have gotten is 14 MPG. Yep, 14. Also if you have an automatic you can put a lot more converter to it and maintain driveability with more gear.

I'm getting about the same through the city in my Fox, AOD/2.73

I just went down from 4.10 to 3.73 (needed topend at the track, I LOVE the 4.10s on the street) a couple weeks ago and now notice a 1.5mpg improvement on my way in to work and back.

I got this MPG by datalogging the PCM with a GPS-corrected speedo.
