ok its been awhile, but i bought my car 1996 gt with 373 gears already in. an ever since i had it, the rearend would whine. but only when i would let off the gas an coast. never under load or down shifting only when coasting would it do it, i had the rear end checked out an rebuilt, but it still whines. everyone i talk to always says one of 2 things, 1. the gears or not in right. 2. it just cause its aftermarket gears is why is whineing. an to be honest i dont believe either. u guys have any ideas on why this is happining, an if so what to do about it. thanks again u all.

Three things could be wrong with it 1.- Gears arent in right 2.-the carrier 3.- or the bearings.

Where did you get them done?

almost every gear set, even stock has whine, but you don't hear it thru the car cause it's not very loud at all and all the sound dampening and everything. so really it's a matter of making it less whiney rather than getting rid of it.

I'm not exactly sure what causes the whine but I think it's the backlash. somebody else will chime in and help you out. the whine shouldn't be noticeable with any gear if done right

Sounds like who ever did the install did not check the back lash or runout. Pull the rear apart and check it yourself or take it to someone that you know for a fact knows what he is doing.

Unless you did your gear install yourself you can't confirm that the backlash and what not is correct. Pull your rear end apart and check it, otherwise anything Javi said could be the problem. I did my own install so I know for a fact that everything was installed within spec. A lot of shops just throw the gears in and use the factory shims and just assume that they are still correct and don't even check them.

well the shop i had rebuild it was supposed to be a good one but i dont know. hell i live in podunk mississippi, where everybody knows everything about fords an chevys, lol. so i guess ill just have to either do it my self or find a better shop, might just have to suck it up an take it to the ford dealership :hammer: but i other than the whine there is no problem out of it, the sound just drives me crazy. an also could that turn into a bigger problem later on???????

Unless its extreme I can't think of anything catastrophic that could happen. Improper gear mesh could do some damage to the gears and over the long term I would assume bearings as well.

Watch him check the backlash and make sure that its within spec. I wonder if he used the stock shims? If he did I would bet that is your problem.

Did you make sure the ring gear bolts were torqued properly and Lock-Tite was used? I just had to have my rear-end rebuilt because we forgot to do that when we put in my 3.73s. Over the course of about 8k miles, they backed out and shot through my diffy cover!
