Generally.

How reliable or dependable is an aode box? I`m assuming in my 2003 I have a 4r70. What the deal with these boxes? Just that I keep reading posts by the same guys ( on another forum ) continually saying they`re garbage with a list of issues and they will fail at some point. My cars only done 21000 miles so I don`t expect problems just yet.

I kinda wondered as I hadn`t found any evidence to suggest they were dodgy or weak. Sure, everybody somewhere will have problems with almost any product but I didnt want to dispute the other guys claims as in Mustang experience I`m still pretty green.

Any input for dudes that know appreciated.

I put 125,000 on that transmission and never had a problem. I also installed a transmission cooler around 35,000 miles ago.

mines got 120k ish on it and shifts like a champ. These tranny's, when treated right are hailed as reliable and stronger than its aode father.

My aode in the 6'r was a weak shifter compared to the 4r70 I have now with almost the same mileage. They also bolt these up with the 5.0 in the later explorers.

On my AODE,

The rear govenor bore was scored from the rings on the output shaft. I tried to hone it out, but it still had 3 little ridges.

It would shift HARD into any gear if you let it.

Its caused by having a zillion miles on it. And when I put it back together, I used a V6 case.

It already had an aftermarket converter and input shaft it it. My stock motor hasnt done anything bad to it yet and still works like a champ.
