I remember someone on here talking about rebuilding tranny's, maybe he could help me. So a friend of mine has a 97 6-spd camaro that he put into a wall, its sitting in his back yard. My question is can I make that 6-spd tranny work for me at a reasonable cost? I was thinking maybe change the input shaft and bellhousing, but I dont know how easy or costly this could turn out to be. I could prolly get the tranny for about $5-600 and it works fine. Maybe less since he just got fired. He says its a t-56. I just wondered if anyone had ever heard of somoene doing this swap before. What would have to be done?

Off the top of my head, the main thing's that will stop you are the Camaro uses a hydrualic throwout bearing, and their shifter comes up at a goofy place.

You could easily start swapping things around to make it work, but there are a couple suck points. One is all the part's to make it works would add up to another 400-500 bucks, without labor. Another is that out of all the T56's, the LT1 version is the weakest.

If you have more time than money, and want to string it out over some months while you collect part's, go for it, otherwise, just save the extra money up front and slap a Cobra T56 there

Something else just came to me. McCleod has a "modular" bellhousing (modular in the normal sense, not our engine sense) that is supposed to adapt any goofy engine to any weird tran. Like, a nailhead Buick, to a Ford T5, or whatever, you can try giving them a call.

Dont need a new tranny, it was just a possibility. I would do it if it was cost effective, but if it would still cost about $1200 I'll just wait until I need one. Thanks for the help.

Don't forget you might also have to get a custom driveshaft which wouldn't be cheap. Those ls 1 t 56 are about as strong as a tremec 3650. Would probably be a waste of money. Just get a TKO
