Went to the dealer tonight to car shop for the wife, they liked my car a lot and offered me $5500 on trade which is the high end trade value, I said I wanted $6500 hoping for $6000, they said they'd work on it. I know they will give me $6k, they won't lose a sale over $500.

What do you think? 92,000 miles, car is in great shape with all VIN tags in place.

I know I could private party sale it for like $7500 or at the very least $7k, but it's a fucking hassle to sell privately when you are selling a cheap car. Get a bunch of greaseballs over beating the snot out of the car before they buy it, plus it's our only car so it'd be a hassle to sell privately and then have to get a ride from the old man to the dealer to buy a new car ASAP.

$6000 is a great deal.

Around here a dealer will probably give you half of that if you're lucky.

$7500 for a SN is a blown SN. Sadly you wont ever get that even though your car is flawless. I say take the trade if you truely want to get rid of the car.

Yea, thats like the kinda money people get for cars with built motors and supercharged.

Realistically it would probably take a long time for him to find a buyer willing to pay even 4 or 5k cash.

These cars really arent in high demand

Right now it kind of depends where the wife lands work. If she lands work somewhere where she can take the ghetto bus then she can do that for a few months and we can save up some cash for a down payment, buy something in the fall, and I can keep the stang. But if she lands work somewhere out in a suburb where there's jack shit for bus service (like how I have to take her to school everyday now) then I will have to trade it to get her something with an auto and I'll be hoofing it via bus to work for a while til I pick something up down the road (Fiesta/Focus?). I'd rather not have two car payments though even though I'd like to get something new, since we would like to get a house in a couple years. Plus I'd like to wait til the Focus has HIDs as an option (they are coming on the '13 ST, so they will be trickling down probably on the '14) or the Fiesta gets the '14 face lift. She had an interview today so we are going to test drive more cars on Saturday and see what pops up with the job situation. Dealer is giving us a car for invoice and 0% financing for 60 months, and presumably they'll find a way to get me to $6k on the trade.

I'd never pay $7000 for an sn95 lol unless it was a cobra with less than 80k miles. SN's aren't everyone's favorite mustang quite frankly. Not many people are out looking for one. I don't mean to offend it's just the sad truth.

If you really need to get out of that car for an auto for the wife, than take the $6000 if they offer that, bc it would be really hard to get that for the car.

Or ditch the camaro

according to NADA and KBB 7500 is good trade for my low mile 02 GT, so I would take 5500 and run for your SN

You should put your car on craigslist for 7500 just as a test to see if you get any calls or emails.

I feel like all these mustangs are hard to sell on the secondary market.

I just saw an aztec gold sn95, straight body, very clean, 2500 bucks in a dealers lot.....

I would keep the car.

These cars go forever, and they are great to drive...parts are cheap and you wont have a car payment.

I honestly would keep the car, because chances are you will never find another one that clean ever again.

Got an email this morning from a local Ford dealer saying they are paying 21% over KBB trade in value...now assuming they are honest with the trade in value of excellent condition, that puts my supposed trade in just north of $6500 with the 21%. But if they are a bag of dicks and say "oh oh that shit's worth $3500, BUT PLUS 21% IT'S A GREAT DEAL!!" ill tell them to blow me.

I noticed a lot of car dealers sites are saying they are in need of trades and paying top dollar, there seems to be a shortage of used car inventory and a big demand for it at dealers in the area.

If they told me $5500, I would have waited for them to think about $6k right there. Then if they said no, I would def sell my car for $5500. I think if I got even $4k for mine I would be lucky.

^^^Only downside to doing that is that then they do the same thing and tell me $6k only if I buy on the spot (which would likely be a bluff but still).

Still waiting to hear back. I told them last night if they got to six, assuming the beetle ends up being the car the wife wants, then I'd very likely make the beetle purchase from them.

this thread is funny, you guys arent seeing the big picture....these dealerships will give you TRADE IN VALUE....aka, yea, you get 6k, but that extra 2k they gave you gets tacked on to your new cars price anyway

Justin is right. Never let them know you have something to trade in. Tell them it is a straight up sale. Once you get your price on the car your buying where you want it, THEN ask them what they will give you for your car. They will give you what ever you ask but they just tack it on to the price of the new car.
